Information works overtime to help customers cope
with the Mumbai flood

During the unprecedented Maharashtra floods of July
2005, Stellar Information Systems Ltd. operated
round the clock to deal with the high number of data
loss incidents in and around the city of Mumbai. As
can be expected, most of the incidents related to
either water getting into the hard drives/computers,
or the high level of moisture causing mechanical
faults. On the days following the flood, the number
of storage media received per day was almost 10
times the normal amount – Stellar coped with this by
working in 24 hour shifts to ensure its high levels
of customer commitment. |

Following a similar flood in Gujarat, the city of
Mumbai was heavily waterlogged due to incessant rain
from the 26th of July to the 1st of August. Most of
Maharashtra was affected, none more so than Mumbai
because of its thriving Metropolis. As much as
between 600 to over 1100 millimeters of rainfall was
received per day. Among other industries affected
during this period, was the IT industry because of
loss of man-hours, productivity and hardware
equipment. During this period, Stellar Information
Systems Ltd, received an unprecedented number of
hard drives to recover data from.
Most cases involved low-level dismantling/repairing
of the hard disk – this was due to the fact that the
disks were rendered immune to recovery using
software because of the presence of moisture on the
sensitive disk platters. The most intensive cases
were sent to the company’s head office in Gurgaon
which is equipped with a state-of-the-art Class-100
clean room. It was not just the sheer number of
organizations which Stellar helped out, but also the
number of disks per organization which witnessed a
sharp jump. For instance, while a corporate office
usually sends in only a disk or two for recovery,
"leading pharma company" Mumbai office sent in as many as 30
disks at a time for recovery, after the floods.

hour shifts to cope with the large increase in data
loss incidents.
“While natural disasters usually account for only 3%
of total incidents of data loss, this season has
seen an extraordinary increase – and the Mumbai
floods are part of a global increase in data loss
caused by natural calamities”, commented Mr. Sunil
