What to Do When Stellar Data Recovery Professional Gives Error Messages "The destination you have chosen is on the same source drive as source"?

 Modified on: March 2, 2020 |    35521 views

The error messages generated by the Stellar Data Recovery Professional software while you press the Recover button are just precautionary messages. They don't mean any harm to your files or the data recovery process, as the software does not allow overwriting to the existing data. There are two possible scenarios for this issue.

Case 1: "Source and destination volume are same"

The software displays this message when you try to save the data recovered from a volume to the same volume. For instance, in the screenshot shown below, Macintosh HD was scanned for deleted files & the same location was chosen to save the recoverable files. Hence, the aforementioned message appeared.

Resolution: To overcome this message, always choose a different volume or an external storage drive to save the recoverable files.

Case 2: "The destination you have chosen is on the same source drive as source"

This message only warns that the volume scanned for deleted files and another volume chosen to save recovered files lies on the same storage drive. source-destination-are-same

Resolution: You can simply click the "Proceed Anyway" button to ignore this message; this is because the volumes are different and there is no fear of overwriting. Or else choose an external storage drive to save the recoverable files.

Important Tip: Always ensure that the external storage drive is larger than the source drive to save your recoverable data. In case you don't have any external data storage device, then choose a different volume with sufficient free space to save the recovered files.

Hi Eric,

If you try to put it back from where it was deleted then SPMDR will display the message shown in CASE - 1 above. This is done to avoid any further data loss on that volume or location.

You must select a different source or volume to save the file. Later you can move the data to your desired destination.

Thanks

What do you mean when you say chose a different volume ????

Danielle

Hi Danielle,

To avoid overwriting of the data, the Stellar software prompts user to save the recovered files on a different volume. The destination of the recovered files shouldn't be same as the source. You can understand this by above images. Hope it helps..

I repeat Danielles question...specifically how do you choose another volume...what do you click on to find the other volume choices?

randy

Hi Randy,

Please find below path to make a selection of other volumes from the software interface.

After scan finishes, Click 'Recover' button<<'Open Directory' Window shows up<
Please let us know for further query.

that still doesn't help. IF scanning your main drive after losing most of it, there is not enough room to put it somewhere else. There is no way i can save it and then move it. You have not clarified how to change the volume in Case 1

Nick

Hi Nick,

Please save the recovered files on a removable media. If problem continues, kindly let us know.

How do I choose where I want to save the recovered files?

Cathlong

Hey Cathlong,

Thanks for your query!!

Please follow simple sequential steps to save recovered files with Stellar Mac data recovery.

1) Once scans finishes, select files and click Recover button.
2) 'Open Directory' window appears. From left pane, select a destination to save recovered files.
3) Once destination is selected, Click 'Choose' and again click 'Proceed Anyway'.
4) The Save process begins and files are saved at chosen destination.

Hope this helps. Let us know for further query.

Thanks

Hi i have the same problem, try to save 300GB on ftp location with more than 1 TB of free space, and error shows that i have only 50GB free, which is the free space on my local drive!?@!

gravatar

TOse

Hi Tose,

There is no support to save recovered files on FTP server using Stellar Mac data recovery software. In order to save files you need to connect an external hard drive.

Hope this helps. Please let us know your further query.

I am receiving the insuffient space error message as well. I am recovering data from an external hard drive with an imaged Mac HD and tried to move to my Mac internal drive which plenty of space when that didn't work I tried moving to the partition on the external drive which is 1 TB and formatted exFAT, where I received the same error.

For some reason it does allow me to move to a 8GB thumb drive but that will take me ages to transfer all my data.

Hi Aaron,

You might be using macOS Sierra and downloaded the older version of Stellar Mac data recovery software. It is recommended to uninstall the older version and download the macOS Sierra compatible Stellar Mac Data Recovery V7.1.0.1 from the page https://www.stellarinfo.com/data-recovery-mac.php Start the scan again and it will be save the recovered files successfully.

Thanks

i do not get the proceed anyway option - im trying to save it to a folder i created on the desktop?

Hi Ray,

You are not getting an option of 'Proceed Anyway' because the source and destination volume are same for the data to be recovered.
If, you try to save the data on another volume of same hard drive then, you will get any option of 'Proceed Anyway'.
For any further queries you can also contact us at 'support@stellarinfo.com'.

I have plenty of space on everywhere I try to save the recovered files to but it still pops up with "Insufficient space" what do i do?

I got the same problem with the Stellar Photo Recovery Platinum in Mac OS Sierra. Does the problem solved by using the version without "Platinum" in 7.1.01?

So the register no. is same as Platinum?

I have an external drive with over 700 Gb free space, so far I did a recovery with Disk Drill and with Recoverit, and had no problems in recovering the scanned file to that drive. WHen I try to do the same with Stellar, I get the message that there is no space........what is going on !!! Lots of people with the same problem.....very frustrating , I spent 4 or 5 hours scanning the damaged drive, your software indicates some 145 GB of recovered files but I cannot save them !!! Very bad
