Knowing & Managing Your Mac Storage Drive

Drive’s Information

To get information about your Mac storage drive, do the following:

Method 1:

(i) Click the Apple menu and then select About This Mac.

(ii) From the Overview tab, see the Startup Disk as Macintosh HD.

(iii) To view more system details, click the System Report button.

(iv) From the sidebar, select Storage under hardware to see more info about the system storage. Also, check SATA/SATA Express & USB. Close the System Report window.

(v) On the System Information window, click the Storage tab. View the space used by file categories on each connected drives. Take your mouse pointer to the different segments to see more information.

(vi) Moreover, in the Storage tab you can view the device type of your start-up disk. In the above screenshot, the Macintosh HD is a flash storage device however in the below one, the device is a SATA disk.

Method 2:

(i) Right-click the storage drive icon present on the Desktop.

(ii) Select Get Info from the context menu.

(iii) Alternatively, click the storage drive icon and press the Command + I keys.

(iv) View the information related to the storage drive from the popup window.

(v) In the General section, look at the storage drive’s necessary information, namely:

  • Kind, which specifies the type of storage drive
  • Created indicates the timestamp when the storage drive was formatted
  • Modified specifies the timestamp when the storage drive was last modified
  • Format identifies the file system of the storage drive
  • Capacity shows the physical space of the storage drive
  • Available indicates how much space in the storage drive is available for use
  • Used specifies how much space in the storage drive is currently used
  • Label defines the storage drive color code

(vi) Click More Info, Name & Extension, Preview, and Sharing & Permission sections to expand the corresponding information associated with the storage drive.

To check the Mac storage drive partition, perform the following:

(i) Press the Command + Space Bar keys to open Spotlight.

(ii) Type ‘disk utility’ then hit Return to open Disk Utility.

(iii) On the left pane of the app, view the tree structure listing different disks & partitions.

(iv) Select a disk or partition to view related information at the bottom of the app.

(v) To manage drive partitions, click the Partition tab. Here, you can add, delete, or merge partitions.

Your Mac shows the internal or connected storage drives in the form of icons on the Desktop.  On macOS, it’s simple to recognize your storage drive. For instance:

  • Macintosh HD is represented as
Start-up disk
  • Time Machine as

To customize your Mac storage drive icon, go through the following steps:

Step i) Download Mac icons from the Internet on your Mac. Navigate to the download location.

Step ii) Right-click the icon that you want to use and select Get Info.

Step iii) Select the thumbnail icon and press Command + C to copy. Then, close the window.

Step iv) To apply the new icon, right-click the Mac storage drive icon and select Get Info.

Step v) Select the thumbnail icon and press Command + V to paste. Then, close the window.
