{"id":107039,"date":"2022-08-17T05:08:50","date_gmt":"2022-08-17T05:08:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/?p=107039"},"modified":"2026-04-15T03:53:50","modified_gmt":"2026-04-15T03:53:50","slug":"target-mailbox-does-not-have-smtp-proxy-matching","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/target-mailbox-does-not-have-smtp-proxy-matching\/","title":{"rendered":"How to Fix Mailbox Migration Error &#8211; &#8220;Target Mailbox Doesn&#8217;t Have an SMTP Proxy Matching&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<?xml encoding=\"utf-8\" ?><?xml encoding=\"utf-8\" ?><p>When trying to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/article\/migrate-exchange-to-office365.php\">move mailboxes from on-premises Exchange Server to Exchange Online<\/a> (Office 365) in a hybrid environment, you may receive the following error:<\/p><pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">The target mailbox doesn't have an SMTP proxy matching '<strong>&lt;domain&gt;.mail.onmicrosoft.com<\/strong>'<\/pre><p>This error could occur due to one or more of the following conditions:<\/p><ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The source mailbox doesn&rsquo;t have the stamp of the Microsoft address <strong>&lt;your name&gt;.mail.onmicrosoft.com<\/strong> as an SMTP address.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The proxy address <strong>&lt;your name&gt;.mail.onmicrosoft.com<\/strong> in your local Exchange Server alias is not synchronized to Exchange Online and the object being moved doesn&rsquo;t have the cloud mail-user object to correspond with.<\/li>\n<\/ul><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"solutions-to-resolve-the-mailbox-doesn&rsquo;t-have-an-smtp-proxy-matching-issue\"><strong>Solutions to Resolve the Mailbox doesn&rsquo;t have an SMTP Proxy Matching Issue<\/strong><\/h2><p>The first thing to do is find the mailbox that doesn&rsquo;t have the correct addresses and find any missing email addresses in your local Exchange Server by using the Exchange Management Shell (EMS) and the Exchange Online PowerShell.<\/p><p>For the local Exchange Server, run the following command:<\/p><pre class=\"wp-block-code command_container\"><code>Get-Mailbox &lt;AffectedUser&gt; | FL EmailAddresses, EmailAddressPolicyEnabled<\/code><\/pre><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"983\" height=\"186\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/find-mailbox-with-incorrect-email-addresss.png\" alt=\"find mailbox with incorrect email addresss\" class=\"wp-image-107042 apply-gradient-on-post-images\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/find-mailbox-with-incorrect-email-addresss.png 983w, https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/find-mailbox-with-incorrect-email-addresss-300x57.png 300w, https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/find-mailbox-with-incorrect-email-addresss-768x145.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 983px) 100vw, 983px\" \/><\/figure><p>For Exchange Online, execute the following command:<\/p><pre class=\"wp-block-code command_container\"><code>Get-MailUser &lt;AffectedUser&gt; | Select -ExpandProperty emailaddresses<\/code><\/pre><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"981\" height=\"121\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/check-the-affected-users.png\" alt=\"check the affected users\" class=\"wp-image-107043 apply-gradient-on-post-images\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/check-the-affected-users.png 981w, https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/check-the-affected-users-300x37.png 300w, https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/check-the-affected-users-768x95.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 981px) 100vw, 981px\" \/><\/figure><p>If the address &lt;your name&gt;.mail.onmicrosoft.com is missing from your local Exchange Server and if you have an applied email address policy, this means that it is missing the &lt;your name&gt;.mail.onmicrosoft.com address. You can update the policy to include the address for the user as a secondary email. You can do this by opening the Email Address Policy from the Mail Flow in the Exchange Admin Center (EAC).<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"707\" height=\"172\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/update-the-policy-via-mail-flow-settings.png\" alt=\"update the policy via mail flow settings\" class=\"wp-image-107044 apply-gradient-on-post-images\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/update-the-policy-via-mail-flow-settings.png 707w, https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/update-the-policy-via-mail-flow-settings-300x73.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 707px) 100vw, 707px\" \/><\/figure><p>Once the synchronization is complete, the mailbox should be able to move.<\/p><p>In case the address is missing from Exchange Online, you will need to check the Office 365 object using the following commands.<\/p><pre class=\"wp-block-code command_container\"><code>(Get-MsolUser -UserPrincipalName &lt;AffectedUserUPN&gt;).Errors.ErrorDetail.ObjectErrors.ErrorRecord.ErrorDescription<\/code><\/pre><pre class=\"wp-block-code command_container\"><code>(Get-AzureADUser -ObjectId &lt;AffectedUserUPN&gt;).Errors.ErrorDetail.ObjectErrors.ErrorRecord.ErrorDescription<\/code><\/pre><p>If the address is missing, run the following command to confirm if the online object has the missing email address.<\/p><pre class=\"wp-block-code command_container\"><code>(Get-MsolUser -UserPrincipalName &lt;AffectedUserUPN&gt;).ProxyAddresses<\/code><\/pre><pre class=\"wp-block-code command_container\"><code>(Get-AzureADUser -ObjectId &lt;AffectedUserUPN&gt;).ProxyAddresses<\/code><\/pre><p>After checking the affected user on Exchange Online, you can re-sync the object in the Azure Active Directory (AAD) sync application to try to identify the issue and rectify it.<\/p><p>Another solution to the problem is to create a migration endpoint from the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/how-to-access-exchange-admin-center\/\">Exchange Admin Center<\/a> (EAC)<\/strong>.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"567\" height=\"345\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/create-migration-endpoint-for-migration.jpg\" alt=\"create migration endpoint for migration\" class=\"wp-image-107045 apply-gradient-on-post-images\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/create-migration-endpoint-for-migration.jpg 567w, https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/create-migration-endpoint-for-migration-300x183.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 567px) 100vw, 567px\" \/><\/figure><p>You can create a new <strong>Migration<\/strong> <strong>Endpoint<\/strong> to start the wizard and choose <strong>Exchange<\/strong> <strong>Remote<\/strong> as this uses the MRS-Proxy base for migration. When the endpoint is created, you can create the migration batch. Once you select the users to migrate, choose the migration endpoint you just created. This should re-start the migration progress.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"to-conclude\"><strong>To Conclude<\/strong><\/h2><p>The above process should fix the problem and you should be able to move your mailboxes from local Exchange Server to Office 365 tenant. However, there could be underlying issues with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/article\/testing-new-exchange-hybrid-configuration-office365.php\">configuration of your hybrid setup<\/a>, Exchange Server, or third-party applications or configurations that could be affecting your hybrid setup. In such cases, you can re-install your Exchange Server and restore the databases from backup but you will lose the business data between the last healthy backup.<\/p><p>The local and native tools are not a guarantee to recover the data. Also, this would result in an increase in the cost of recovery, added resources, and administrative effort.
