The organization has decommissioned the Exchange Server while retaining the Active Directory Server for authentication and having the client machines all joined to the Azure Active Directory. Also, a final backup is taken before the servers are decommissioned.<\/p><p>Before diving straight into the process of shutting down the Exchange Server and decommissioning the server&rsquo;s hardware, it is important to perform a clean uninstallation. So, you need to clean off the Active Directory Schema. A manual clean-up of the schema using the ADSIEdit is highly risky as after removing or modifying the ADSIEdit, there is no undo button. If something goes wrong, you could end up with your Active Directory being unusable.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"the-decommissioning-process\"><strong>The Decommissioning Process<\/strong><\/h2><p>The process for this is as follows:<\/p><ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Right-click on Start.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click on Run and type ADSIEdit.msc.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Open Configuration\/Configuration Services.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Open Microsoft Exchange\/ &lt;Your Organization&gt;.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Open Administrative Groups and Exchange Administrative Groups.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Open Databases and delete the desired databases from the list.<\/li>\n<\/ul><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"866\" height=\"584\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/CNDatabases.png\" alt=\"ADSI Edit\" class=\"wp-image-109956 apply-gradient-on-post-images\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/CNDatabases.png 866w, https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/CNDatabases-300x202.png 300w, https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/CNDatabases-768x518.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 866px) 100vw, 866px\" \/><\/figure><p>This could have repercussions on the stability of your Active Directory setup and the users would be unable to log into their services or machines. This would also impact applications which are Active Directory dependent.<\/p><p>The first step is to delete all the mailboxes from the databases. After this is complete, you need to manually remove the arbitration mailboxes. This can be done by using the below command in the Exchange Management Shell (EMS).<\/p><pre class=\"wp-block-code command_container\"><code><code>Get-Mailbox -Arbitration &ndash;Database | Disable-Mailbox &ndash;Arbitration &ndash;DisableLastArbitrationMailboxAllowed<\/code><\/code><\/pre><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"818\" height=\"67\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Get-Mailbox-Arbitration.png\" alt=\"Disable mailbox arbitration\" class=\"wp-image-109957 apply-gradient-on-post-images\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Get-Mailbox-Arbitration.png 818w, https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Get-Mailbox-Arbitration-300x25.png 300w, https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Get-Mailbox-Arbitration-768x63.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 818px) 100vw, 818px\" \/><\/figure><p>Once this is done, you can go ahead and remove the actual mailbox database from the server. For this, use the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/learn.microsoft.com\/en-us\/powershell\/module\/exchange\/remove-mailboxdatabase\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Remove-MailboxDatabase<\/a><\/strong> command as given below.<\/p><pre class=\"wp-block-code command_container\"><code><code>Get-MailboxDatabase | Remove-MailboxDatabase<\/code><\/code><\/pre><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"445\" height=\"51\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Remove-MailboxDatabase.png\" alt=\"Get MailboxDatabase\" class=\"wp-image-109961 apply-gradient-on-post-images\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Remove-MailboxDatabase.png 445w, https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Remove-MailboxDatabase-300x34.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 445px) 100vw, 445px\" \/><\/figure><p>Next, you need to remove any pending messages in your Exchange Server Queue. These are the messages which are not delivered or stuck.<\/p><pre class=\"wp-block-code command_container\"><code><code>Get-Message | Remove-Message<\/code><\/code><\/pre><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"313\" height=\"70\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Remove-Message.png\" alt=\"Get Message \" class=\"wp-image-109962 apply-gradient-on-post-images\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Remove-Message.png 313w, https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Remove-Message-300x67.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 313px) 100vw, 313px\" \/><\/figure><p>The next step is to uninstall the Exchange Server from the Add remove programs. Once all is done and there are no issues, you can simply disjoin the Exchange Server from the Active Directory and decommission the hardware hosting the Exchange Server.<\/p><p>In case of a <strong>hybrid setup<\/strong>, before you go ahead and uninstall the Exchange Server, you need to first remove the <strong>hybrid configuration<\/strong> of the local setup. For this, use the following command.<\/p><pre class=\"wp-block-code command_container\"><code><code>Remove-HybridConfiguration -Confirm:$false<\/code><\/code><\/pre><p>Then, you need to remove the connectors from your Exchange Online from the <strong>mail<\/strong> <strong>flow<\/strong> and <strong>Connectors<\/strong> section.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"849\" height=\"387\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/mail-flow-and-Connectors.png\" alt=\"Exchange admin centre\" class=\"wp-image-109965 apply-gradient-on-post-images\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/mail-flow-and-Connectors.png 849w, https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/mail-flow-and-Connectors-300x137.png 300w, https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/mail-flow-and-Connectors-768x350.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 849px) 100vw, 849px\" \/><\/figure><p>Also, the Organizational Sharing from the <strong>organization <\/strong>and <strong>sharing <\/strong>section.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"771\" height=\"361\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/organization-and-sharing-section.png\" alt=\"Exchhange admin centre\" class=\"wp-image-109966 apply-gradient-on-post-images\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/organization-and-sharing-section.png 771w, https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/organization-and-sharing-section-300x140.png 300w, https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/organization-and-sharing-section-768x360.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 771px) 100vw, 771px\" \/><\/figure><p>Lastly, disable OAuth on-premises using the command below on both the local Exchange Server and Exchange Online.<\/p><pre class=\"wp-block-code command_container\"><code><code>Get-IntraorganizationConnector | Set-IntraOrganizationConnector -Enabled $False<\/code><\/code><\/pre><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"964\" height=\"137\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Set-IntraOrganizationConnector.png\" alt=\"Adminstrator windows powershell\" class=\"wp-image-109967 apply-gradient-on-post-images\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Set-IntraOrganizationConnector.png 964w, https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Set-IntraOrganizationConnector-300x43.png 300w, https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Set-IntraOrganizationConnector-768x109.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 964px) 100vw, 964px\" \/><\/figure><blockquote class=\"note_alert\">\n<p><em><strong>Note:<\/strong> Microsoft recommends to not remove the Exchange Hybrid option in the Azure AD Connect.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"what-could-go-wrong?\"><strong>What Could go Wrong?<\/strong><\/h2><p>You may either miss resources or encounter an issue or lost some data in the transition. It is a very difficult task to restore the whole server, especially after <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/article\/migrate-exchange-to-office365.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">migrating from on-premises to Office 365<\/a><\/strong> and decommissioning the Exchange Server. If the Active Directory is retained, the Exchange Server is decommissioned, and the Active Directory schema is cleaned up, restoring the Exchange Server alone would not be sufficient as you will end up with the mailbox databases that are not mounting due to requirements from the Active Directory.<\/p><p>You also need to consider the resources and administrative effort required to restore the whole infrastructure. In case you only backed up the databases, you will not be able to port those databases back into the new Exchange Server installation.
