The complete error message appears as follows:<\/p><p><em><strong>ERROR<\/strong><br>Mailbox server <strong>EXCHSRV01<\/strong> cannot be removed from the database availability group because mailbox database <strong>DB01<\/strong> has multiple copies. Use Remove-MailboxDatabaseCopy either to remove the copy from this server or to remove the copies from other servers in the database availability group.<\/em><\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"412\" height=\"275\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/5-1.jpg\" alt=\"Mailbox server EXCHSRV01 \" class=\"wp-image-179431 apply-gradient-on-post-images\" style=\"width:542px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/5-1.jpg 412w, https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/5-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/5-1-150x100.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 412px) 100vw, 412px\" \/><\/figure><p>To understand why such an error occurs, first see how the database copies are managed in a DAG.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"understanding-the-dag-architecture\">Understanding the DAG Architecture<\/h2><p>The main purpose of setting up a <strong>Database Availability Group (DAG)<\/strong> is to ensure <strong>high availability<\/strong>. In this setup, each member server has primary database and several copies of that database. The database copy continuously replicates data from the primary database. However, if the primary database is corrupted or any other issue occurs, the passive database copy becomes active and works as the primary database.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"steps-to-resolve-mailbox-server-cannot-be-removed-from-the-dag-error\"><a><\/a>Steps to Resolve Mailbox Server cannot be removed from the DAG Error<\/h2><p>A database in DAG may have multiple copies stored across member servers for redundancy. You must remove all the database copies from the member Exchange Server that you want to remove from the DAG. If you try to remove a server with database copies, you may get the error &ldquo;<em>Mailbox server cannot be removed from the database availability group because mailbox database <strong>DB01<\/strong> has multiple copies.&rdquo;<\/em><\/p><p>Let&rsquo;s see how to safely remove the database copies from the server and resolve the error.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Step 1: Check the Database Copies<\/strong><\/h3><p>First, you need to check which database copies are stored on the mailbox server that you want to remove from the DAG. Once you have the list of databases, you can remove the copies from the server and then remove the server from the DAG without any errors or issues.<\/p><p>You can use the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/how-to-use-get-mailboxdatabasecopystatus-command\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Get-MailboxDatabaseCopyStatus<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;cmdlet (see the below example) to get the list of all database copies.<\/p><pre class=\"wp-block-code command_container\"><code><strong>Get-MailboxDatabaseCopyStatus * | sort Name | ft &ndash;AutoSize<\/strong><\/code><\/pre><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"599\" height=\"168\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Picture12.png\" alt=\"Use this Get-MailboxDatabaseCopyStatus\" class=\"wp-image-179432 apply-gradient-on-post-images\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Picture12.png 599w, https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Picture12-300x84.png 300w, https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Picture12-150x42.png 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 599px) 100vw, 599px\" \/><\/figure><p>In the above image, you can see that there are database copies on the Exchange mailbox server &ndash; <strong>EXCHSRVIB1<\/strong>.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Step 2: Move Database Copies<\/strong><\/h3><p>Before removing the database copies, you must move all the active database copies to a different Exchange mailbox server. Otherwise, you will encounter another error message.<\/p><p>To move a mailbox database, you can use the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/move-activemailboxdatabase-cmdlet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Move-ActiveMailboxDatabase<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;cmdlet (see the below example).<\/p><pre class=\"wp-block-code command_container\"><code><strong>Move-ActiveMailboxDatabase -Server \"EXCHSRVIB02\" -ActivateOnServer \"EXCHSRVIB01\" -SkipMoveSuppressionChecks -Confirm:$false<\/strong><\/code><\/pre><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"605\" height=\"39\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Picture13.png\" alt=\"Use this Move-ActiveMailboxDatabase\" class=\"wp-image-179433 apply-gradient-on-post-images\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Picture13.png 605w, https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Picture13-300x19.png 300w, https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Picture13-150x10.png 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 605px) 100vw, 605px\" \/><\/figure><p>Use the above cmdlet to move other active database copies.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Step 3: Remove Database Copy from the Server<\/strong><\/h3><p>Once the mailbox database active copies are moved, you can remove the database copies from the server. However, before proceeding, consider the following:<\/p><ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Mailbox database copies can only be removed from a healthy database availability group (DAG). If the DAG is not healthy, you will not be able to remove any mailbox database copies.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you are removing the last passive copy of the database, ensure that continuous replication circular logging (CRCL) is not enabled for the specified mailbox database.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>After removing a database copy, you must manually delete any database and transaction log files from the server.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The user account that you are using to remove database copies must be a member of the <strong>Organization Management<\/strong> role group.<\/li>\n<\/ol><p>To remove the database copies using the <strong>Exchange Admin Center (EAC),<\/strong> follow the below steps:<\/p><ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Log in to the EAC and navigate to <strong>servers<\/strong> &gt; <strong>databases<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"892\" height=\"410\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Picture14.png\" alt=\"Log in to the EAC and navigate to servers\" class=\"wp-image-179434 apply-gradient-on-post-images\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Picture14.png 892w, https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Picture14-300x138.png 300w, https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Picture14-768x353.png 768w, https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Picture14-150x69.png 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 892px) 100vw, 892px\" \/><\/figure><ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Select the mailbox database (the copy of which you want to remove).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In the <strong>Details<\/strong> pane of the database, select the passive copy and click <strong>Remove<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"910\" height=\"418\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Picture15.png\" alt=\"select the passive copy\" class=\"wp-image-179435 apply-gradient-on-post-images\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Picture15.png 910w, https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Picture15-300x138.png 300w, https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Picture15-768x353.png 768w, https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Picture15-150x69.png 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 910px) 100vw, 910px\" \/><\/figure><ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Clicking <strong>yes<\/strong> to confirm the process.<\/li>\n<\/ul><p>As an alternative, you can use the&nbsp;<strong>Remove-MailboxDatabaseCopy<\/strong>&nbsp;command to remove the database copies from the mailbox server.<\/p><p>For instance:<\/p><pre class=\"wp-block-code command_container\"><code><strong>Remove-MailboxDatabaseCopy -Identity \"MBXDB01\\EXCHSRVIB01\"<\/strong><\/code><\/pre><p>You will receive a warning. Type&nbsp;<strong>Y<\/strong>&nbsp;and press&nbsp;<strong>Enter&nbsp;<\/strong>to confirm. The database copy will be removed from the server.<\/p><p>If you want to remove all the database copies from the mailbox server at once, you can use the following command:<\/p><pre class=\"wp-block-code command_container\"><code><strong>Get-MailboxDatabaseCopyStatus -Server \"EXCHSRVIB01\" | Remove-MailboxDatabaseCopy -Confirm:$false<\/strong><\/code><\/pre><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Step 4: Again Check Database Copies Status<\/strong><\/h3><p>Check that the mailbox server you want to remove from the DAG does not have any active database copies. For this, use the following command:<\/p><pre class=\"wp-block-code command_container\"><code><strong>Get-MailboxDatabaseCopyStatus * | sort Name | ft &ndash;AutoSize<\/strong><\/code><\/pre><p>If the output does not display the mailbox server name you need to remove, you can go ahead and remove the mailbox server. If you see any database copy on the server with healthy or mounted status, remove the database copy and then proceed to the next step.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Step 5: Remove the Server from DAG<\/strong><\/h3><p>To remove the mailbox server from DAG with no active or mounted database copies, you can use the&nbsp;<strong>Remove-DatabaseAvailabilityGroupServer&nbsp;<\/strong>PowerShell cmdlet (see the below example) in the Exchange Management Shell (EMS).<\/p><pre class=\"wp-block-code command_container\"><code><strong>Remove-DatabaseAvailabilityGroupServer -Identity DAG01 -MailboxServer EXCHSRVIB1<\/strong><\/code><\/pre><p>When prompted, type&nbsp;<strong>Y&nbsp;<\/strong>and press the&nbsp;<strong>Enter<\/strong>&nbsp;key.<\/p><p>If you want to use the&nbsp;<strong>Exchange Admin Center<\/strong>&nbsp;(EAC) to remove the member server, follow these steps:<\/p><ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Open the&nbsp;<strong>EAC&nbsp;<\/strong>and log in as administrator.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Go to&nbsp;<strong>servers<\/strong>&nbsp;&gt;&nbsp;<strong>database availability groups<\/strong>&nbsp;and then select the DAG.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click <strong>Manage DAG Membership.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"618\" height=\"347\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Picture16.png\" alt=\"Click Manage DAG Membership\" class=\"wp-image-179436 apply-gradient-on-post-images\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Picture16.png 618w, https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Picture16-300x168.png 300w, https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Picture16-150x84.png 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 618px) 100vw, 618px\" \/><\/figure><ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Select the Exchange Server you want to remove and click the&nbsp;<strong>Remove (-) <\/strong>button<strong>.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"333\" height=\"406\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Picture17.png\" alt=\"Select the Exchange Server you want to remove\" class=\"wp-image-179437 apply-gradient-on-post-images\" style=\"width:399px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Picture17.png 333w, https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Picture17-246x300.png 246w, https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Picture17-150x183.png 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 333px) 100vw, 333px\" \/><\/figure><ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Click&nbsp;<strong>Save<\/strong>. To avoid this error, you must remove the active database copies from the mailbox server. In this article, we have explained how to safely remove the mailbox server from a Database Availability Group (DAG) after removing the database copies.
