You cannot have a particular user&rsquo;s mailbox on both. There is mail flow to the local Exchange Server, if the mailbox is on-premises, and vice versa. There could be an issue during the move to Exchange Online due to which the mailbox on on-premises server remains active. If this happens, then there will be mismatch in data and risk of data loss.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"641\" height=\"359\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/mail-flow-to-the-local-Exchange-Server.png\" alt=\"mail flow to the local Exchange Server\" class=\"wp-image-140258 apply-gradient-on-post-images\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/mail-flow-to-the-local-Exchange-Server.png 641w, https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/mail-flow-to-the-local-Exchange-Server-300x168.png 300w, https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/mail-flow-to-the-local-Exchange-Server-150x84.png 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 641px) 100vw, 641px\" \/><\/figure><p>As you can see in the above image, if a new email is sent to the <strong>&ldquo;User 1&rdquo;<\/strong>, it will be delivered to the local Exchange Server and will never reach the online mailbox.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"how-to-recover-from-this-situation?\"><strong>How to Recover from this Situation?<\/strong><\/h2><p>You need to decide if you are going to keep the Exchange Online copy. This means that you have to disconnect the mailbox on the local machine and remove it from the setup. After this, the Exchange Online mailbox will become the primary mailbox.<\/p><p>Let&rsquo;s start the process. Open the <strong>Exchange Management Shell (EMS)<\/strong> and save the SMTP Address, Legacy Exchange DN, and the Exchange Attributes by using the below scripts. Now, add the <strong>LegacyExchangeDN <\/strong>value from the previous local mailbox as an <strong>X500 <\/strong>address using the below command.<\/p><pre class=\"wp-block-code command_container\"><code><code>Set-RemoteMailbox -Identity \"user mailbox\" -EmailAddresses @{add=\"x500:\/o=First Organization\/ou=Exchange Administrative Group (FYDIBOHF23SPDLT)\/cn=Recipients\/cn=&lt;user identity&gt;\"}<\/code><\/code><\/pre><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"989\" height=\"132\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Set-RemoteMailbox.png\" alt=\"Set-RemoteMailbox\" class=\"wp-image-140265 apply-gradient-on-post-images\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Set-RemoteMailbox.png 989w, https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Set-RemoteMailbox-300x40.png 300w, https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Set-RemoteMailbox-768x103.png 768w, https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Set-RemoteMailbox-150x20.png 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 989px) 100vw, 989px\" \/><\/figure><p>After this is done, you need to get the <strong>GUID <\/strong>of both the database for the disconnected mailbox and the remote mailbox database by using the below commands.<\/p><pre class=\"wp-block-code command_container\"><code><code>Get-MailboxDatabase \"&lt;local database&gt;\" | fl *GUID*<\/code><\/code><\/pre><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"413\" height=\"112\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Get-MailboxDatabase.png\" alt=\"Get-MailboxDatabase \" class=\"wp-image-140267 apply-gradient-on-post-images\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Get-MailboxDatabase.png 413w, https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Get-MailboxDatabase-300x81.png 300w, https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Get-MailboxDatabase-150x41.png 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 413px) 100vw, 413px\" \/><\/figure><pre class=\"wp-block-code command_container\"><code><code>Get-Mailbox \"&lt;user name&gt;\" | fl *ExchangeGUID*<\/code><\/code><\/pre><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"465\" height=\"99\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Get-Mailbox.png\" alt='Get-Mailbox \"&lt;user name&gt;\" | fl *ExchangeGUID*' class=\"wp-image-140269 apply-gradient-on-post-images\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Get-Mailbox.png 465w, https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Get-Mailbox-300x64.png 300w, https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Get-Mailbox-150x32.png 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 465px) 100vw, 465px\" \/><\/figure><p>Now, you need to copy the data from the local Exchange Server to the cloud mailbox. You need to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/restore-disconnected-mailbox-in-exchange-server\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">restore the contents from the disconnected mailbox<\/a> to the Exchange Online. For this process, you need to have the credentials of the admin account of your Exchange Server.<\/p><p>First, you need to run the below command to get the admin credentials.<\/p><pre class=\"wp-block-code command_container\"><code><code>$cred = Get-Credential<\/code><\/code><\/pre><p>Then, run the mailbox restore request with the data you collected from the text file and the above command.<\/p><pre class=\"wp-block-code command_container\"><code><code>New-MailboxRestoreRequest -RemoteHostName \"&lt;exchange server&gt;\" -RemoteCredential $cred -SourceStoreMailbox \"&lt;exchange guid of disconnected mailbox&gt;\" -TargetMailbox \"&lt;exchange guid of cloud mailbox&gt;\" -RemoteDatabaseGuid \"&lt;guid of on-premises database&gt;\" -RemoteRestoreType DisconnectedMailbox<\/code><\/code><\/pre><blockquote class=\"note_alert\">\n<p><strong><em>Note: <\/em><\/strong><em>The above process is not supported by the Exchange Server 2010.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote><p>Another important thing to note is that the command is designed to work on a single Exchange Server organization. The cross-premises restore jobs will fail due to mismatch between the local and online mailboxes. The mailbox request will end with the <strong>FailedOther<\/strong> status.<\/p><p>This is a normal behaviour. It should be disregarded as the <strong>migration <\/strong>and <strong>restore <\/strong>of the data is successful. To ensure that the data has been fully restored and all the items are moved to the online mailbox, you can use the following command.<\/p><pre class=\"wp-block-code command_container\"><code><code>Get-MailboxRestoreRequest \"&lt;mailbox's ID&gt;\" | `<\/code>\n<code>Get-MailboxRestoreRequestStatistics -IncludeReport | `<\/code>\n<code>select -ExpandProperty Report | `<\/code>\n<code>select -ExpandProperty Entries | `<\/code>\n<code>select -Last 2 | `<\/code>\n<code>select -First 1<\/code><\/code><\/pre><p>This will give you a full overview of the restore of data. You must check the report for any <strong>baditemsencountered<\/strong>, <strong>largeitemsencountered,<\/strong> and <strong>missingitemsencountered<\/strong>.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"conclusion\"><strong>Conclusion<\/strong><\/h2><p>The above situation would not arise in a normal environment. However, if such a situation arises, you need to be prepared to mitigate the issue. You need to ensure that the data will be restored from the disabled mailbox. It is to be noted that you can run the scripts mentioned above if the mailbox is healthy, the database is healthy, and the hybrid setup is working well.
