The complete error message looks like:<\/p><p><code><em>Cannot save changes made to an item to store. --&gt; MapiExceptionMessagePerFolderCountQuotaExceeded: Unable to save changes. (hr=0x80004005, ec=1252)<\/em><\/code><\/p><p>From the error message, it seems that the issue is related to the count of items per folder that have exceeded the quota. There is no size limit for a mailbox or a folder. All seems to be working fine as the users don&rsquo;t have any issues while saving their data on the Exchange Server.<\/p><p>As per Microsoft documentation, there is a limit of number of items in a single folder. So, it seems that one of the folders in your mailbox\/s has reached the one million items. As said, the user doesn&rsquo;t have any issue. The issue only occurs when you try to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/article\/migrate-exchange-to-office365.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">migrate the mailbox to Office 365<\/a>.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"how-to-resolve-&ldquo;cannot-save-changes-made-to-an-item-to-store&rdquo;-error?\">How to Resolve &ldquo;Cannot save changes made to an item to store&rdquo; Error?<\/h2><p>First, you need to identify the mailbox and remove it from the migration batch so that you can continue migrating the data while you troubleshoot the issue with the affected mailbox\/s.<\/p><p>Open the <strong>Exchange Management Shell (EMS) <\/strong>window. Type the below command to get the Folder Statistics of a particular mailbox and temporary store it in the variable $root.<\/p><pre class=\"wp-block-code command_container\"><code><code>$root=Get-MailboxFolderStatistics -Identity &lt;user email address&gt;<\/code><\/code><\/pre><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"692\" height=\"98\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Get-MailboxFolderStatistics.png\" alt=\"Get-MailboxFolderStatistics\" class=\"wp-image-141290 apply-gradient-on-post-images\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Get-MailboxFolderStatistics.png 692w, https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Get-MailboxFolderStatistics-300x42.png 300w, https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Get-MailboxFolderStatistics-150x21.png 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 692px) 100vw, 692px\" \/><\/figure><p>Now, <strong>validate <\/strong>the mailbox and check which <strong>root folder<\/strong> has exceeded the quota by using the below command.<\/p><pre class=\"wp-block-code command_container\"><code><code>$root | sort itemsinfolder -descending |ft folderpath,itemsinfolder<\/code><\/code><\/pre><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"615\" height=\"212\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/validate-the-mailbox-and-check-which-root-folder-has-exceeded-the-quota.png\" alt=\"check which root folder has exceeded the quota\" class=\"wp-image-141292 apply-gradient-on-post-images\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/validate-the-mailbox-and-check-which-root-folder-has-exceeded-the-quota.png 615w, https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/validate-the-mailbox-and-check-which-root-folder-has-exceeded-the-quota-300x103.png 300w, https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/validate-the-mailbox-and-check-which-root-folder-has-exceeded-the-quota-150x52.png 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 615px) 100vw, 615px\" \/><\/figure><p>If the result doesn&rsquo;t show any folders which have exceeded the said quota, you can use the command a little bit different to get the statistics of the user folders rather than the <strong>interpersonal messaging (IPM) folder<\/strong>.<\/p><p>For this, you need to modify the first command and use the Folder Scope function to be the Non IPM Root folders (see the below example).<\/p><pre class=\"wp-block-code command_container\"><code><code>$non_root=Get-MailboxFolderStatistics &lt;email address&gt; -FolderScope NonIpmRoot<\/code><\/code><\/pre><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"846\" height=\"97\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/use-the-Folder-Scope-function-to-be-the-Non-IPM-Root-folders.png\" alt=\"use the Folder Scope function to be the Non IPM Root folders\" class=\"wp-image-141293 apply-gradient-on-post-images\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/use-the-Folder-Scope-function-to-be-the-Non-IPM-Root-folders.png 846w, https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/use-the-Folder-Scope-function-to-be-the-Non-IPM-Root-folders-300x34.png 300w, https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/use-the-Folder-Scope-function-to-be-the-Non-IPM-Root-folders-768x88.png 768w, https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/use-the-Folder-Scope-function-to-be-the-Non-IPM-Root-folders-150x17.png 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 846px) 100vw, 846px\" \/><\/figure><p>When you run the above command, you might get the warning that the run was unable to retrieve the corresponding delete policy tag from the Active Directory. This can be ignored. It might happen that the folder exceeding the quota could be a folder, like <strong>System,<\/strong> <strong>Spooler Queue, <\/strong>or the Deferred Action folder.<\/p><p>If you manage to find the problematic folder, you will not be able to remove or move it using Outlook. You will need to use an application called <strong>MFCMAPI <\/strong>which you can connect directly to the store and delete\/move the hidden folders which are not accessible by the user.<\/p><p>After this, you can try to resume the migration.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"to-conclude\"><strong>To Conclude<\/strong><\/h2><p>The &ldquo;Cannot save changes made to an item to store&rdquo; error is one of the issues that you might encounter during a migration.
