Rebuild Outlook Data File (OST)<\/h2><p>Inconsistent, oversized, or large OST files can cause a plethora of issues in Outlook as it fails to retrieve new messages or synchronize changes with the mailbox server. However, you can create a new OST file and resolve the inconsistency issue with existing OST file. The steps to rebuild the OST file are as follows:<\/p><ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Close Outlook and press <strong>Windows + R.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In the <strong>Run<\/strong> window, type <strong>%localappdata%\/Microsoft\/Outlook<\/strong> and click <strong>OK <\/strong>orpress the <strong>Enter <\/strong>key. It will open the default PST file location.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Copy or rename the OST file with the <strong>.bak<\/strong> extension to create a backup copy. You can use this OST backup to restore missing emails after resolving the issue.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>After the backup, delete the original OST file and start Outlook.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Outlook won&rsquo;t find the old OST file and hence, creates a new OST file. It will sync (download) all the mail items from the mailbox server.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>After the sync is complete, send a new email. It should be sent immediately.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/li>\n<\/ul><p>Once the error is resolved, check all your mail folders and mail items. If there are missing emails or mail items, use an OST to PST converter software, such as Stellar Converter for OST to extract the missing mail items from the backup OST file and save them to a new Outlook importable PST file. You can then import this converted PST file into your Outlook&rsquo;s new profile and restore the missing mail items. The software also comes in handy when you need to extract and restore mail items from inaccessible, oversized, or orphaned Outlook OST files.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"tips-to-prevent-outlook-error-500\">Tips to Prevent Outlook Error 500<\/h2><ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Regularly check and install Outlook and Windows updates.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Adhere to the recommended size limit of attachments while sending emails.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do not download and install add-ins from third-party or untrusted sources.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Scan the OST file with SCANPST to keep an eye on the OST file&rsquo;s health and fix minor issues or inconsistencies before they damage the data file.<\/li>\n<\/ul><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"conclusion\">Conclusion<\/h2><p>The Outlook error 500, often accompanied by the message &lsquo;Something Went Wrong&rsquo;, can disrupt email communication as users can&rsquo;t connect to their mailbox or access emails.
