Microsoft has finally confirmed the presence of a bug in its latest Windows 11 update, which is triggering Blue screen of Death errors, and has pushed out a fix for the same. This issue affects its three most recent releases – KB5055523, KB5053656, and KB5053598.<\/p>

According to Microsoft<\/a>, “After installing this update and restarting your device, you might encounter a blue screen exception with error code 0x18B indicating a SECURE_KERNEL_ERROR.”<\/p>

We <\/a>first highlighted<\/a> the reports of the BSoD error when Microsoft rolled out its March 2025 update. At the time, the complaints were largely overlooked as isolated incidents. However, following the April 2025 Windows 11 updates, an increasing number of users are now facing these Blue Screen errors, which prompted Microsoft to take the necessary steps.<\/p>

Microsoft Rushes Out a Fix<\/h2>

Microsoft has temporarily addressed the issue using Known Issue Rollback (KIR), a tool that reverses problematic non-security updates distributed through Windows update.<\/p>

“The issue is mitigated using Known Issue Rollback (KIR). Please note that it might take up to 24 hours for the resolution to propagate automatically to consumer devices,” stated Microsoft in its support document<\/a>. This means that since it’s a KIR, it will be directly shipped to your Windows 11 PC, and you do not need to download it separately. <\/p>

The process is slightly different for IT teams as they need to download a Group Policy file from Microsoft’s update support pages and proceed with the documented installation steps. Once installed, the corresponding policy will show up under Computer Configuration<\/strong> > Administrative Templates<\/strong> in the Group Policy Editor.<\/p>

After installing the .msi file, you’ll need to restart the affected machines so the rollback can fully take effect. However, keep in mind that this is not a permanent fix as the KIR just disables the part causing this problem and doesn’t address the issue itself. We’re expecting Microsoft to release a full resolution in the coming months.<\/p>
