When it comes to restoring a database from backup, there are two main options the DBA can use: &lsquo;With RECOVERY&rsquo; and &lsquo;With NORECOVERY&rsquo;.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"how-to-recover-sql-database-with-recovery-and-with-norecovery?\"><strong>How to Recover SQL database With RECOVERY and with NORECOVERY?<\/strong><\/h2><p><strong>Requirements<\/strong><\/p><p>Before performing recovery of SQL Server database using the RECOVERY and NORECOVERY options, you must have the following installed on your system.<\/p><ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Any SQL Server version<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Stellar Repair for MS SQL installer<\/li>\n<\/ul><p><strong>Getting started<\/strong><\/p><p>Before restoring the db, make sure you create backup of the database first. You can create the backup using SSMS or T-SQL.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"steps-to-create-sql-database-backup-using-ssms\"><strong>Steps to Create SQL Database Backup using SSMS<\/strong><\/h2><ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Open SSMS, right-click on Databases, and then click <strong>Tasks<\/strong> &gt; <strong>Back Up<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul><figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"720\" height=\"320\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/1-2.png\" alt=\"Select Back Up as the Task\" class=\"wp-image-31268 apply-gradient-on-post-images\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/1-2.png 720w, https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/1-2-300x133.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px\" \/><\/figure><ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>As per the requirement, you can perform a full backup. For this, select &lsquo;<strong>FULL<\/strong>&rsquo; from &lsquo;Recovery model&rsquo; under the &lsquo;<strong>Source<\/strong>&rsquo; section. Next, specify the path where you want to store the backup of your database.<\/li>\n<\/ul><p class=\"has-background note-alert\"><strong>Note:<\/strong> You can also perform&nbsp;other types of backups&nbsp;such as differential and transactional.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"911\" height=\"668\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/2.jpg\" alt=\"specify the path where you want to store the backup of your database\" class=\"wp-image-31270 apply-gradient-on-post-images\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/2.jpg 911w, https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/2-300x220.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/2-768x563.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 911px) 100vw, 911px\" \/><\/figure><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"steps-to-create-sql-database-backup-using-t-sql-in-ssms\"><strong>Steps to Create SQL Database Backup using T-SQL in SSMS<\/strong><\/h2><p>You can generate T-SQL backup script to perform a backup task using SSMS. To do it, follow these steps:<\/p><ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Click the <strong>Script <\/strong>button to create the backup script in a new query window and then save it to a new file or in the clipboard. You can also create a scheduled backup job.<\/li>\n<\/ul><figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"911\" height=\"668\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/3.png\" alt=\"Script Option\" class=\"wp-image-31271 apply-gradient-on-post-images\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/3.png 911w, https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/3-300x220.png 300w, https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/3-768x563.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 911px) 100vw, 911px\" \/><\/figure><p>To automate the backup process instead of configuring it manually, execute the following T-SQL code:<\/p><pre class=\"wp-block-code command_container\"><code>BACKUP DATABASE [sales] TO  DISK = N'c:\\sql\\sales.bak' WITH NOFORMAT, NOINIT,  NAME = N'earnings-Full Database Backup', SKIP, NOREWIND, NOUNLOAD,  STATS = 10\nGO<\/code><\/pre><figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"971\" height=\"161\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/4.png\" alt=\"Execute Query to Backup Database to Disk\" class=\"wp-image-31273 apply-gradient-on-post-images\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/4.png 971w, https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/4-300x50.png 300w, https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/4-768x127.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 971px) 100vw, 971px\" \/><\/figure><ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If you need to take backup daily, it is possible to save the script action into a job:<\/li>\n<\/ul><figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"907\" height=\"272\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/5.png\" alt=\"Select Script Action to Job for Daily Backup\" class=\"wp-image-31274 apply-gradient-on-post-images\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/5.png 907w, https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/5-300x90.png 300w, https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/5-768x230.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 907px) 100vw, 907px\" \/><\/figure><p>This option will allow creating the backup in a Job. A job is a group of operations you can run in the SQL Server Agent. The SQL Server Agent is a SQL Server component with its own service used to run jobs.<\/p><ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Specify the &lsquo;Name&rsquo; and &lsquo;Owner&rsquo; for the job.<\/li>\n<\/ul><figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"688\" height=\"259\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/6.png\" alt=\"New Backup Job\" class=\"wp-image-31275 apply-gradient-on-post-images\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/6.png 688w, https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/6-300x113.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 688px) 100vw, 688px\" \/><\/figure><ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The step of the job contains the T-SQL Script that runs the backup:<\/li>\n<\/ul><figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"830\" height=\"220\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/7.png\" alt=\"Steps of the Job\" class=\"wp-image-31276 apply-gradient-on-post-images\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/7.png 830w, https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/7-300x80.png 300w, https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/7-768x204.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 830px) 100vw, 830px\" \/><\/figure><ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>By default, the backup runs in the master database and you can modify the T-SQL code:<\/li>\n<\/ul><figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"685\" height=\"619\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/8.png\" alt=\"Execute Command to Back up Master Datavase\" class=\"wp-image-31278 apply-gradient-on-post-images\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/8.png 685w, https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/8-300x271.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 685px) 100vw, 685px\" \/><\/figure><ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You can also schedule the job to run at a specified time and day. For example, you can run the backup daily or monthly at 9:00 (Example)<\/li>\n<\/ul><figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"662\" height=\"577\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/9.png\" alt=\"New Job Schedule\" class=\"wp-image-31291 apply-gradient-on-post-images\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/9.png 662w, https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/9-300x261.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 662px) 100vw, 662px\" \/><\/figure><ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The code stores the backup in the c:\\sql drive and the file name is sales.bak. The database to back up is the &lsquo;sales&rsquo; database. For more information about the other arguments, refer to <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/sql\/t-sql\/statements\/backup-transact-sql?view=sql-server-2017\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this link.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"sql-server-restore-with-recovery-and-with-norecovery\"><strong>SQL Server Restore With Recovery and with NORECOVERY<\/strong><\/h2><p>Let&rsquo;s discuss both these options in detail:<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>RECOVERY Option<\/strong><\/h3><p>Recovery is the default option. This option does a rollback and a roll forward. Use this option when you need to restore a database from a FULL backup. Follow these steps to restore database with recovery in SQL Server 2008 and above versions:<\/p><ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In SSMS, right-click <strong>Databases<\/strong>, and then select the <strong>Restore Database<\/strong> option:<\/li>\n<\/ul><figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"464\" height=\"268\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/10.png\" alt=\"Restore Database Option in SSMS\" class=\"wp-image-31305 apply-gradient-on-post-images\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/10.png 464w, https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/10-300x173.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 464px) 100vw, 464px\" \/><\/figure><ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In <strong>&lsquo;Restore Database&rsquo;<\/strong> window, select the database that you want to restore and the backup available:<\/li>\n<\/ul><figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"856\" height=\"364\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/11.png\" alt=\"Select the Database for Backup\" class=\"wp-image-31306 apply-gradient-on-post-images\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/11.png 856w, https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/11-300x128.png 300w, https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/11-768x327.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 856px) 100vw, 856px\" \/><\/figure><ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In the <strong>&lsquo;Options&rsquo;<\/strong> page, select the recovery state as <strong>RESTORE WITH RECOVERY<\/strong>:<\/li>\n<\/ul><figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"864\" height=\"721\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/12.png\" alt=\"Choose 'RESTORE WITH RECOVERY' state\" class=\"wp-image-31307 apply-gradient-on-post-images\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/12.png 864w, https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/12-300x250.png 300w, https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/12-768x641.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 864px) 100vw, 864px\" \/><\/figure><ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Additionally, you can use T-SQL instead of the SSMS GUI. This is useful if you want to automate the tasks:<\/li>\n<\/ul><pre class=\"wp-block-code command_container\"><code>RESTORE DATABASE [earnings] FROM  DISK = N'c:\\sql\\earnings.bak' WITH  FILE = 1,  NOUNLOAD,  STATS = 5\n, RECOVERY \nGO<\/code><\/pre><p>In this example, it is not necessary to use the RECOVERY argument which is the default one, but I added it to understand the difference compared with the other option.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>With NORECOVERY Option<\/strong><\/h3><p>Use the NORECOVERY option when you need to restore multiple backups. It puts the database in &lsquo;RESTORING&rsquo; state to prevent users from accessing the database unless additional backups are restored. Restore with NORECOVERY is used for restoring each database backup except the last. The last backup can be restored using the RECOVERY option to bring the db online for usage. <\/p><p>For example, if you need to restore a full database backup followed by a transaction log backup, the full backup will be restored with NORECOVERY argument and then the log backup will be restored with recovery.<strong> <\/strong>Here&rsquo;s how to do it:<\/p><pre class=\"wp-block-code command_container\"><code>RESTORE DATABASE [earnings] FROM  DISK = N'c:\\sql\\earnings.bak' WITH  FILE = 2,  NORECOVERY,  NOUNLOAD,  STATS = 5\nRESTORE LOG [earnings] FROM  DISK = N'C:\\Program Files\\Microsoft SQL Server\\MSSQL14.MSSQLSERVER\\MSSQL\\Backup\\earnings_LogBackup_2018-12-21_12-24-25.bak' WITH  FILE = 1,  NOUNLOAD,  STATS = 5, RECOVERY <\/code><\/pre><p class=\"has-background note-alert\"><strong>Note<\/strong>: In the above query, the first command restores the db with NORECOVERY option, and the second command restores the log backup using the RECOVERY option.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-other-options-to-restore-the-data\"><strong>Other Options to Restore the Data<\/strong><\/h3><p>If you do not have a backup or if it is damaged, you can use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/sql-recovery.php\"><strong>SQL Recovery software<\/strong><\/a>, such as Stellar Repair for MS SQL to restore your data. The software helps repair a damaged (corrupt) SQL database and restore it to its original state. You can download the software from here:<\/p><div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cloud.stellarinfo.com\/StellarRepairforMSSQLTechnician-B.exe\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/images\/free-download-windows.png\" alt=\"Free Download\" class=\"wp-image-8144 apply-gradient-on-post-images\"><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div><p>To use this software, you just need to select the MDF file and repair it.
