{"id":41871,"date":"2019-06-24T07:11:24","date_gmt":"2019-06-24T07:11:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/?p=41871"},"modified":"2023-04-25T09:13:28","modified_gmt":"2023-04-25T09:13:28","slug":"how-do-i-shred-files-as-per-dod-standards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/how-do-i-shred-files-as-per-dod-standards\/","title":{"rendered":"How do I shred files as per DOD Standards?"},"content":{"rendered":"<?xml encoding=\"utf-8\" ?><?xml encoding=\"utf-8\" ?><p><strong>File Shredding<\/strong> is a data erasure technique used to destroy sensitive and unwanted files from a digital storage media permanently&mdash;making data recovery somewhat impossible. <\/p><p>However, when you shred your sensitive and confidential files by using international data erasure standards such as DOD 5220.22-M, NATO, etc., the files are destroyed beyond the scope of recovery&mdash;where no data recovery software or services including forensics tools can recover your shredded files.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"how-dod-5220.22-m-standard-works?\"><strong>How DOD 5220.22-M Standard Works?<\/strong><\/h2><p>The DOD 5220.22-M (3 Passes\/7 Passes) is an international data sanitization (secure-erasure) standard, which works in the following ways:<\/p><p><strong>3 Pass DOD Standard:<\/strong><\/p><ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Pass 1:<\/strong> Writes a zero and verifies the overwriting<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Pass 2:<\/strong> Writes a one and verifies the overwriting<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Pass 3:<\/strong> Writes a random character and verifies the overwriting<\/li>\n<\/ul><p><strong>In 7 Pass DOD Standard<\/strong>, the DOD standard is run twice, and the last 7th pass is final overwrite verification.<\/p><p>Besides, there are a few other iterations of DOD standard such as DOD 5220.22-M (E), DOD 5220.22-M (ECE), etc. Each works a bit differently but essentially destroys your files permanently.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"tools-for-file-shredding-with-dod-standards\"><strong>Tools for File Shredding with DOD Standards<\/strong><\/h2><p>Following are a few tools that you can use to <strong>shred your sensitive files as per U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) Standards:<\/strong><\/p><ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>SDelete<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol><p>SDelete is a free command line utility from <strong>Microsoft<\/strong> that you can use to wipe your sensitive files. SDelete implements <strong>DOD 52220.22-M<\/strong> data sanitization standard to overwrite files on your internal and external drive volume(s). The utility can also wipe empty storage space&mdash;shredding previously deleted and recoverable sensitive files with DOD standard. <\/p><p>Follow these steps to use SDelete for file shredding as per DOD standards,<\/p><ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>On your Windows PC, download the <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/sysinternals\/downloads\/sdelete\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"SDelete (opens in a new tab)\">SDelete<\/a> utility<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li> Extract and place the <strong>SDelete.exe<\/strong> files on the Desktop<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li> Hold the Shift key and right-click on the desktop. Click &lsquo;<strong>Open command window here.<\/strong>&rsquo;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li> Now type the following command,  <strong>sdelete &ndash;p 5 X:\\FolderName\\FileName.txt <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"656\" height=\"387\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/SDelete.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-127282 apply-gradient-on-post-images\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/SDelete.jpg 656w, https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/SDelete-300x177.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/SDelete-150x88.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 656px) 100vw, 656px\" \/><\/figure><p>Use the above command to shred individual files as per DOD standard. You can also shred the entire folder and its sub-folders along with files by entering the following command:<\/p><p><strong>sdelete -s &ndash;p 5 X:\\FolderPath\\<\/strong><\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"656\" height=\"507\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Deleting-Files.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-127283 apply-gradient-on-post-images\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Deleting-Files.jpg 656w, https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Deleting-Files-300x232.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Deleting-Files-150x116.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 656px) 100vw, 656px\" \/><\/figure><p>Here <strong>&ndash;p 5 <\/strong>denotes the number of passes and<strong> X <\/strong>is the drive letter. You can increase or decrease the number of passes by changing the numerical value. However, more the number of passes, more time it will take to destroy a particular file or folder containing multiple files.<\/p><p><strong>PLEASE NOTE: <\/strong>SDelete destroys on the file data from the disk but not the file names.
