You could use any extension, but it is a good practice to use the bak file. A SQL Server backup can be restored and when it is restored, it extracts the .mdf file and the log file. A backup file can have 1 or multiple data files and transaction log files.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"how-to-backup-the-database-into-a-.bak-file\"><strong>How to backup the database into a .bak file<\/strong><\/h2><p>In order to backup your database to a bak, in SSMS (SQL Server Management Studio) select the database and go to <strong>Tasks<\/strong>&gt;<strong>Back Up<\/strong>:<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"659\" height=\"89\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/3-1.png\" alt=\"Select the database and go to Tasks&gt;Back Up\" class=\"wp-image-42823 apply-gradient-on-post-images\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/3-1.png 659w, https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/3-1-300x41.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 659px) 100vw, 659px\" \/><\/figure><p>By default, the backup type is full. A full backup will contain all the information, whereas a differential backup will backup only the differences between the last backup and the changes of the current database. A differential backup takes less space because it does not store all the information. <\/p><p>The restoration is not exactly converting a bak file into MDF file, basically, it is extracting the information from the bak file to get the MDF file and the transaction log files also. Finally, for backup strategies, refer to this <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"link (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/sql\/relational-databases\/backup-restore\/back-up-and-restore-of-sql-server-databases?view=sql-server-2017\" target=\"_blank\">link<\/a>.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"what-is-an-mdf\"><strong>What is an MDF<\/strong><\/h2><p>MDF is a SQL Server database extension for the main data files. The database is stored in physical files that can be an MDF file and NDF files. You can use the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/sql-database-toolkit.php?utm_source=Site_Blog&amp;utm_medium=Site_Blog_BKF_to_MDF&amp;utm_campaign=Site_Blog_BKF_to_MDF\">Stellar Toolkit for MS SQL<\/a> Server. There are 3 applications in the Toolkit, select the Extract from MS SQL Backup. When a file is restored, the backup file is converted to a database composed in an MDF file, transaction logs and sometimes a secondary file with ndf extension. You can use the Stellar Toolkit for MS SQL to get the MDF file from the bak file.
