We will show different alternatives to solve the error message.<\/p><p>The error\nmessage is the following:<\/p><p class=\"has-vivid-red-color has-very-light-gray-background-color has-text-color has-background\">SQL error 3156: SQL error 3156: File &lsquo;filename&rsquo; cannot be restored to &lsquo;C:\\Program Files\\Microsoft SQL Server\\MSSQL.3\\MSSQL\\FTData\\Name&rsquo;. Use WITH MOVE to identify a valid location for the file.<\/p><p>You can read the reference guide from here: <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mssqltips.com\/sqlservertip\/3113\/sql-server-database-restore-with-move-or-not-with-move\/\" target=\"_blank\">SQL Server Database RESTORE WITH MOVE or not WITH MOVE<\/a><\/p><p>Also, You Can follow easy steps as mentioned below.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-requirements\"><strong>Requirements<\/strong><\/h3><p>The current article is suitable for any SQL Server version. <\/p><ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>SQL\nServer installer<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>SSMS\ninstaller<\/li>\n<\/ul><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-getting-started\"><strong>Getting started<\/strong><\/h3><p>The first\nthing that you need to do is check if the user that is restoring the file has\npermissions in the file specified.<\/p><p>To test it, go to the Windows Explorer and copy and paste the path mentioned in the error message:<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"610\" height=\"257\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/file-explorer.png\" alt=\"SQL Server Error 3156 Database\" class=\"wp-image-43757 apply-gradient-on-post-images\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/file-explorer.png 610w, https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/file-explorer-300x126.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/figure><p>If you do not have permissions restore in another path with the permissions on the folder or grant permissions to the user in the folder.<\/p><p>In order to change the restoration path, in the Restore Database window, go to the files tab:<\/p><div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"955\" height=\"721\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/files.png\" alt=\"SQL Server Error 3156 Database\" class=\"wp-image-43706 apply-gradient-on-post-images\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/files.png 955w, https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/files-300x226.png 300w, https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/files-768x580.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 955px) 100vw, 955px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div><p>If you check the Relocate all files to the folder, you can change the restoration location to a valid place.<\/p><div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"954\" height=\"721\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/relocate-files.png\" alt=\"SQL Server Error 3156 Database\" class=\"wp-image-43707 apply-gradient-on-post-images\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/relocate-files.png 954w, https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/relocate-files-300x227.png 300w, https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/relocate-files-768x580.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 954px) 100vw, 954px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div><p>If you do not like the user interface, you can use the T-SQL commands:<\/p><pre class=\"wp-block-code command_container\"><code>USE [master]\nRESTORE DATABASE [databasename] FROM  DISK = N'C:\\Program Files\\Microsoft SQL Server\\MSSQL14.MSSQLSERVER\\MSSQL\\Backup\\aw.bak' WITH  FILE = 1,  \nMOVE N'filename' TO C:\\Program Files\\Microsoft SQL Server\\MSSQL.3\\MSSQL\\FTData\\Name'.mdf',  \nMOVE N'Logfile_log' TO N'C:\\sql\\logfile_log.ldf',  NOUNLOAD,  STATS = 5<\/code><\/pre><p>The code uses the MOVE clause to move the files to a different location. <\/p><p>If your backup is damaged, you can use the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/sql-database-toolkit.php?utm_source=site_blog&amp;utm_medium=site_blog_error3156&amp;utm_campaign=site_blog_error3156\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Stellar Toolkit for MS SQL  (opens in a new tab)\">Stellar Toolkit for MS SQL<\/a><\/strong>Solution. The backup files have usually the bak extension and are usually stored in program files\\SQL Server\\MSSQLXX.MSSQLSERVER\\MSSQL\\Backup folder, however, you can customize and save the backups in a different place if you want.<\/p><div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"519\" height=\"572\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/backup-extractor-software.png\" alt=\"SQL Server Error 3156 Database\" class=\"wp-image-43709 apply-gradient-on-post-images\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/backup-extractor-software.png 519w, https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/backup-extractor-software-272x300.png 272w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 519px) 100vw, 519px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div><p>There is also an option to search the backup if you do not know where is it. The Look in specifies where to start the search and the <strong>Search in Folder<\/strong>, will start the Search:<\/p><div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"519\" height=\"572\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/backup-extractor-software-select-file.png\" alt=\"Search in folder option to search backup file\" class=\"wp-image-43710 apply-gradient-on-post-images\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/backup-extractor-software-select-file.png 519w, https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/backup-extractor-software-select-file-272x300.png 272w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 519px) 100vw, 519px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div><p>Once selected the backup file, press the Scan button:<\/p><div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"519\" height=\"572\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/backup-extractor-software-Copy.png\" alt=\"Scan option to search backup file\" class=\"wp-image-43711 apply-gradient-on-post-images\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/backup-extractor-software-Copy.png 519w, https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/backup-extractor-software-Copy-272x300.png 272w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 519px) 100vw, 519px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div><p>The Scan button will start repairing the backup and the software will give you a Window to select the backup set. In this example, we will store into MSSQL.<\/p><p>You can save the backup in a New database or in an existing database (live database). Also, you can specify the Instance name and the Authentication type.
