When the <strong>Run<\/strong> dialog box appears, type <strong>Regedit<\/strong> and click <strong>OK<\/strong> or press <strong>Enter<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The&nbsp;Registry Editor&nbsp;is launched. In it, use the appropriate keys, depending on the version of Outlook you&rsquo;re using.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For Outlook 2016, the key is:<\/li>\n<\/ol><pre class=\"wp-block-code command_container\"><code>HKEY_CURRENT_USER\\Software\\Microsoft\\Office\\16.0\\Outlook<\/code><\/pre><ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>For Outlook 2013, the key is:<\/li>\n<\/ul><pre class=\"wp-block-code command_container\"><code>HKEY_CURRENT_USER\\Software\\Microsoft\\Office\\15.0\\Outlook<\/code><\/pre><ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>For Outlook 2010, the key is:<\/li>\n<\/ul><pre class=\"wp-block-code command_container\"><code>HKEY_CURRENT_USER\\Software\\Microsoft\\Office\\14.0\\Outlook<\/code><\/pre><ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>For Outlook 2007, the key is:<\/li>\n<\/ul><pre class=\"wp-block-code command_container\"><code>HKEY_CURRENT_USER\\Software\\Microsoft\\Office\\12.0\\Outlook<\/code><\/pre><ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In the right-hand-side pane of Registry Editor, right-click on an empty area. Then, select <strong>New &gt; Expandable String Value<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul><div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"apply-gradient-on-post-images\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/2.png\" alt=\"Selection of Expandable String Value in the Registry Editor\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Figure 2: Selection of Expandable String Value in the Registry Editor<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div><ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A new Value is created. In the&nbsp;Edit String&nbsp;dialog box, assign&nbsp;ForceOSTPath&nbsp;name to the Value and enter the new default location, under the <strong>Value Data<\/strong> option, to save the OST. Then, click on <strong>OK<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul><div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"apply-gradient-on-post-images\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/3.png\" alt=\"Edit String to enter value name and value data\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Figure 3: Edit String to enter value name and value data<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div><ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Close Registry Editor and restart MS Outlook.<\/li>\n<\/ul><blockquote class=\"note_alert\">\n<p><strong><em>Note:<\/em><\/strong><em>&nbsp;When a new Exchange email account is set up, a new OST file will be created automatically at the default location that you&rsquo;ve chosen for OST file.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-method-2-use-outlook-email-client\"><strong>Method 2: Use Outlook Email Client&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3><p>You can also use your Outlook account to change Outlook file location. However, you need to know the default location of the OST file, which depends on the Windows OS version installed on your system. &nbsp;<\/p><blockquote class=\"note_alert\">\n<p><em><strong>Note:<\/strong><\/em><em>&nbsp;This method works for Outlook 2013, 2010, 2007, and 2003 version.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote><p>In Windows 10, 8, 7, and Vista, the default location of the OST file is<br><em><strong>&nbsp;C:\\Users\\%username%\\AppData\\Local\\Microsoft\\Outlook<\/strong><\/em><\/p><p>In Windows XP, the default OST file location is:<\/p><p><em><strong>C:\\Documents and Settings\\%username%\\Local Settings\\Application Data\\Microsoft\\Outlook<\/strong><\/em><\/p><p>To change OST file location, follow the given steps:<\/p><ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Open the&nbsp;<strong>Account Settings&nbsp;<\/strong>dialog box and select the&nbsp;<strong>Data Files.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Select <strong>Exchange Server account<\/strong> and click on <strong>Settings.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul><div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"apply-gradient-on-post-images\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/4.jpg\" alt=\"Stellar\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Figure 4: Selecting Settings tab in the Data Files section<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div><ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In&nbsp;<strong>Microsoft Exchange&nbsp;<\/strong>account, go to the&nbsp;<strong>Advanced&nbsp;<\/strong>section, uncheck the&nbsp;<strong>Use Cached Exchange Mode<\/strong>&nbsp;checkbox and then click&nbsp;&lsquo;<strong>OK<\/strong>&rsquo;.<\/li>\n<\/ul><div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"apply-gradient-on-post-images\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/5.png\" alt=\"Actions in the Advanced section of Microsoft Exchange account\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Figure 5: Actions in the Advanced section of Microsoft Exchange account<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div><ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>When it prompts, click on the&nbsp;<strong>OK <\/strong>tab.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In the&nbsp;<strong>Advanced&nbsp;<\/strong>tab, choose&nbsp;<strong>Outlook Data File Settings <\/strong>&gt;&nbsp;<strong>Disable Offline Use<\/strong>&nbsp;&gt;&nbsp;<strong>Yes<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul><blockquote class=\"note_alert\">\n<p><em><strong>Note:<\/strong><\/em><em>&nbsp;If the&nbsp;<\/em><strong><em>Disable Offline Use<\/em><\/strong><em>&nbsp;option is unavailable, return to Step 3 and uncheck the&nbsp;<\/em><strong><em>Use Cached Exchange Mode<\/em><\/strong><em>&nbsp;checkbox.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote><ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Choose&nbsp;<strong>Outlook Data File Settings&nbsp;<\/strong>and then select &lsquo;<strong>I want to move the old file<\/strong><strong>&rsquo;<\/strong> option. Here, select the&nbsp;<strong>Browse<\/strong>&nbsp;tab, then the&nbsp;<strong>offline Outlook Data (OST)<\/strong>&nbsp;file that was moved to a new folder at any location, and then click&nbsp;<strong>Open. Outlook will create a new OST file.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In the&nbsp;<strong>Advanced&nbsp;<\/strong>section of Microsoft Exchange account, place a checkmark on the&nbsp;<strong>Use Cached Exchange Mode<\/strong>&nbsp;checkbox and click&nbsp;<strong>OK.<\/strong>&nbsp;When it prompts to restart Outlook email client, click on the&nbsp;<strong>OK<\/strong>&nbsp;tab.<\/li>\n<\/ul><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"apply-gradient-on-post-images\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/cmd.png\" alt=\"MKLINK Command to Create Symbolic Link\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Figure 6: Prompt to restart Outlook<\/figcaption><\/figure><ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Close the&nbsp;<strong>Account Settings&nbsp;<\/strong>and the&nbsp;<strong>Mail Setup<\/strong>&nbsp;dialog boxes.<\/li>\n<\/ul><blockquote class=\"note_alert\">\n<p><em><strong>Note:<\/strong><\/em><em>&nbsp;When a new OST file is created, the old OST file is not deleted automatically. You have to delete the file manually.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-method-3-use-symbolic-links-to-repoint-ost-location\"><strong>Method 3: Use Symbolic Links to Repoint OST Location<\/strong><\/h3><p>You can use&nbsp;Symbolic Links&nbsp;to repoint the OST file from the default location to another <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/article\/find-ost-file-location-easily.php\">OST location<\/a>. For this, you need to set up a symbolic link by using MKLINK command.<\/p><p>To create symbolic link, follow the given steps:<\/p><ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Move the OST file from the default original location to a new location.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Open the Command Prompt window by using administrator credentials.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Execute the mklink command:&nbsp;mklink &ldquo;C:\\old-path&rdquo; &ldquo;D:\\New path&rdquo;. See the below example:<\/li>\n<\/ul><pre class=\"wp-block-code command_container\"><code><code>mklink %localappdata%\\Microsoft\\Outlook\\&lt;file name&gt; \"D:\\Outlook Data Files\\&lt;file name&gt;\"<\/code><\/code><\/pre><div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"624\" height=\"326\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/image-2.png\" alt=\"MKLINK Command to Create Symbolic Link\" class=\"wp-image-76044 apply-gradient-on-post-images\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/image-2.png 624w, https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/image-2-300x157.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 624px) 100vw, 624px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div><p class=\"has-text-align-center\">Figure 7: MKLINK Command to Create Symbolic Link<\/p><p>As soon as you hit the Enter key after correctly entering the command, the symbolic link is created.<\/p><blockquote class=\"note_alert\">\n<p><em><strong>Note:<\/strong>&nbsp;When you move a file by using a&nbsp;symbolic link, a shortcut is created at the default location of the&nbsp;folder. If the shortcut is deleted, it breaks the link and the file gets back to the original location.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote><p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"660\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/GoX2Bjq7_kY\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe><\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"conclusion\"><strong>Conclusion<\/strong><\/h2><p>Changing default location of OST file is not always recommended. You may face issues after changing Outlook data file location or the process may go wrong due to some error. In such a case, the OST file may become inaccessible or orphaned. You can&rsquo;t access an orphaned OST with your Outlook. Such OST file needs to be converted to PST to access its data.
