Suddenly, out of nowhere, my Mac crashed, and the screen turned pink.<\/p><p>I am using a 2020 M1-powered MacBook Air with 24 GB RAM. With so much computing muscle under its skin, I never expected my Mac to run into issues. But it did.<\/p><div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"750\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/pink-screen-of-death.jpg\" alt=\"pink screen of death\" class=\"wp-image-182938 apply-gradient-on-post-images\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/pink-screen-of-death.jpg 750w, https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/pink-screen-of-death-300x160.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/pink-screen-of-death-150x80.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div><p>I probed the problem online and found that the pink screen of death is a typical macOS bug. I checked for any available macOS updates and found one. I installed it and thankfully, doing this helped me fix the issue quite easily and get my presentation back.<\/p><p>But, it left me with a question.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"what-causes-a-pink-screen-of-death-on-a-mac?\">What Causes a Pink Screen of Death on a Mac?<\/h2><p>While searching for a fix in the online forums, I found several reasons behind the pink screen of death on Mac.<\/p><ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Kernel panic<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Damaged display or display cables<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Malfunctioning USB accessory<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Software incompatibility or bugs<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Running resource-intensive applications simultaneously<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Corrupted GPU drivers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Conflicting applications<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Power issues<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Overheating<\/li>\n<\/ul><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"how-to-fix-to-macbook-pink-screen-of-death?\">How to Fix to MacBook Pink Screen of Death?<\/h2><p>During my research, I found that many users with M1 Mac systems get frequent pink screens of death. User speculations suggest that it could be a graphics glitch or a buggy macOS update. But, in general, this screen indicates a possible hardware or software issue.<\/p><p>Read below as you will find various step-by-step methods that could help you fix the pink screen of death.<\/p><p>Before we jump to more complicated solutions, let&rsquo;s try some quick fixes:<\/p><ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Restart your Mac<\/strong>: Disconnect any recently connected peripherals, shut down, and reboot your Mac.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Connect to an external display<\/strong>: This way, you can check if the Pink screen issue on your Mac is due to a faulty display.<\/li>\n<\/ol><figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><tbody><tr><td><strong>Fact:<\/strong> <em>Some older MacBooks (manufactured between 2018 and 2019) had a manufacturing defect that caused the screens to turn pink. If you don&rsquo;t see the pink screen, the issue could be due to any other reason, such as conflicting software, buggy update, corrupted GPU driver, etc.<\/p><p>Follow the steps below to safely boot your Mac in safe mode.<\/p><p><strong>For Apple Silicon Mac systems:<\/strong><\/p><ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Shut down your Mac.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Press and hold the power button until you see the <strong>Loading startup options<\/strong> screen.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Next, select a volume from the list.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Press and hold the <strong>Shift<\/strong> key and click on <strong>Continue<\/strong> in Safe Mode.<\/li>\n<\/ul><p>The Mac will restart automatically in the Safe Mode. You will see <strong>Safe Boot<\/strong> mentioned in the menu bar.<\/p><p><strong>For Intel-based Mac systems:<\/strong><\/p><ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Restart your Mac and immediately press and hold the <strong>Shift<\/strong> key until the login window appears on the screen.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Log in to Mac. You may be prompted to log in again.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You will see the Safe Boot mentioned in the menu bar on either the first or the second login window.<\/li>\n<\/ul><p>You can also refer to this <a href=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/en-in\/guide\/mac-help\/mh21245\/mac\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">guide to verify if your Mac has booted up in safe mode<\/a>.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Method 2. Update macOS<\/h3><p>Another reason behind encountering a pink screen of death on your Mac is installing a buggy or outdated system update. You can try to fix the issue by installing the latest macOS updates. Here&rsquo;s what to do:<\/p><ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Click on the <strong>Apple Logo<\/strong> in the top-left corner and then click on <strong>System Settings<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In the Settings window, click on <strong>General<\/strong> in the left panel.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Then, click on <strong>Software Update<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Install any available update\/s.<\/li>\n<\/ul><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Method 3. Fix Problematic Applications<\/h3><p>Sometimes, problematic or outdated applications could cause incompatibility issues with macOS, resulting in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stellarinfo.com\/blog\/kernel-panic-not-syncing-vfs-on-mac\/\">kernel panic<\/a> and the pink screen of death. Some cases of kernel panic and subsequent pink screen of death on a Mac arose while users were using photo, video, or audio editing applications. Newer Macs running on Apple Silicon don&rsquo;t have an SMC.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote><p>Here&rsquo;s how to <strong>reset SMC on MacBooks:<\/strong><\/p><ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Disconnect the power cord &gt; shut down your MacBook.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hold the <strong>Shift + Option + Control<\/strong> keys and then press and hold down the power button.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Wait for 10 seconds to elapse, and then release the keys.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reconnect the power cable with your Mac system and power it ON.<\/li>\n<\/ul><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Method 6. Reset NVRAM<\/h3><p>Non-volatile RAM or NVRAM is a dedicated memory section that stores data even when the Mac is Powered OFF. It stores information, such as volume settings, screen resolution, brightness, startup disk selection, and more.<\/p><p>If there are any conflicts with these parameters or display settings, your Mac will display the pink screen of death.<\/p><blockquote class=\"note_alert\">\n<p><strong>Note:<\/strong> <em>The following instructions will work only on Intel-powered Mac systems. Apple Silicon Mac computers automatically test NVRAM on startup and reset it, if required.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote><ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Power OFF your Mac.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Press the Power button to switch ON the Mac.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Next, press and hold the <strong>Option + Command + P + R<\/strong> keys once your Mac reboots.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Release the keys once you hear the second startup chime.<\/li>\n<\/ul><blockquote class=\"note_alert\">\n<p><strong>Note:<\/strong> <em>If<\/em> <em>you have a T2-chip enabled Mac, release the above keys after the Apple logo appears and disappears for the second time.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Method 7. Reinstall macOS<\/h3><p>If you get the pink screen of death on your Mac after employing the above methods, try &nbsp;reinstalling macOS. This is a last resort before you take it to an Apple Store or Genius Bar.<\/p><p>Here&rsquo;s what to do:<\/p><ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Make sure your Mac is connected to the internet.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Restart your Mac.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Once the system starts rebooting, press and hold the <strong>Command + R<\/strong> keys. This will boot your Mac into the Recovery Mode.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Once you see the recovery tools menu on the screen, choose the <strong>Reinstall macOS<\/strong> option.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Follow the on-screen instructions to reinstall macOS on your problematic Mac.<\/li>\n<\/ul><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"recover-data-from-a-mac-showing-the-pink-screen-of-death\">Recover Data from a Mac Showing the Pink Screen of Death<\/h2><p>Reinstalling macOS is not destructive. It is always recommended to reinstall macOS on the current installation via the Recovery partition.
