1.About Stellar Photo Recovery
Stellar Photo Recovery software can quickly recover all your lost images and media files. It supports a range of digital photo file formats, audio file formats, and video file formats for recovery.
The software supports almost all the popular brands of cameras. Stellar Photo Recovery also supports digital card reader or external storage media.
Stellar Photo Recovery performs a scan to find all the recoverable images and media files. The software provides a preview of the scanned images and media files. The user can save the scan information file of the scanned storage media. This saved scan information file can be used later to recover lost images and media files with the help of Stellar Photo Recovery.

3.Getting Started
3.1.Installation Procedure
Before installing the software, please ensure that your system meets the following minimum system requirements:
Minimum System Requirements:
- Processor: Pentium Processors
- Operating System: Windows 10 / Windows 8.1 / Windows 8 / Windows 7.
- RAM: 2 GB minimum (4 GB recommended)
- Hard Disk: 250 MB of free space
To install the software:
- Double-click StellarPhotoRecovery.exe executable file to start the installation. Setup – Stellar Photo Recovery dialog box is displayed.
- Click Next. License Agreement dialog box is displayed.
- Choose I accept the agreement option. The Next button will be enabled. Click Next. Select Destination Location dialog box is displayed.
- Click Browse to select the destination path where the setup files get stored. Click Next. Select Start Menu Folder dialog box is displayed.
- Click Browse to provide a path for program’s shortcuts. Click Next. Select Additional Tasks dialog box is displayed.
- Select checkboxes as per your choice. Click Next. Ready to Install dialog box is displayed.
- Review your selections. Click Back if you want to change them. Click Install to start the installation. The Installing window shows the installation process.
- On completion of the installation process, Completing the Stellar Photo Recovery Setup Wizard window is displayed. Click Finish.
Note: Clear Launch Stellar Photo Recovery checkbox to prevent the software from launching automatically.
3.2.Launching the Software
To launch Stellar Photo Recovery in Windows 10:
- Click Start icon -> All apps -> Stellar Photo Recovery -> Stellar Photo Recovery Or,
- Double click Stellar Photo Recovery icon on the desktop. Or,
- Click Stellar Photo Recovery tile on the home screen.
To launch Stellar Photo Recovery in Windows 8.1 / 8:
- Click Stellar Photo Recovery tile on the home screen. Or,
- Double click Stellar Photo Recovery icon on the desktop.
To launch Stellar Photo Recovery in Windows 7:
- Click Start -> All Programs -> Stellar Photo Recovery -> Stellar Photo Recovery. Or,
- Double click Stellar Photo Recovery icon on the desktop. Or,
- Click Stellar Photo Recovery icon in Quick Launch.
3.3.Getting Familiar with User Interface
The main user interface of Stellar Photo Recovery software is quite simple, easy to use and effective. On launching the software Recover Photo, Audio & Video screen is displayed:
Main user interface contains 2 major recovery options:
- Connected Drives – These include all the drives and external storage media connected to the system.
- Physical Disk – This includes the physical disks attached to the system.
The user interface contains buttons that let you access various features of the software with ease.
For quick access to additional tools of Stellar Photo Recovery, click on More Tools button given on the top right corner of the main interface.
3.3.1.Getting Familiar with Buttons

3.4.Ordering the Software
You can purchase Stellar Photo Recovery software online. For pricing details and to place an order, if you have already downloaded and installed the demo edition of the software, click directly on the (Buy) button on the main user interface.
3.5.Activating the Software
Online Activation-
The demo edition is for evaluation purposes only. You need to activate the software to use its full functionality. Use the Activation Key received via email after purchasing the software to activate it.
To activate the software online:
1. Run the demo edition of Stellar Photo Recovery software.
2. Click the Activation button , Activation window is displayed as shown below:
3. If you don’t have the activation key, click Get it now button in the window to purchase the software.
4. Once the order is confirmed, an Activation Key is sent to the email that you have provided while purchasing the software.
5. Paste or type the Activation Key (received through email after purchasing the product) and click Activate button (Please ensure an active Internet connection).
6. Stellar Photo Recovery automatically communicates with the license server to verify the entered key. If the entered key is valid, activation is completed successfully.
7. ‘Stellar Photo Recovery Activated Successfully’ message is displayed. Click OK.
Offline Activation-
Offline Activation is a manual method of activating the software when the online activation is not available.
To activate the software offline:
1. Run demo edition of Stellar Photo Recovery software.
2. From the menu bar, click on Advanced Settings .
3. The Advanced Settings window will appear, click on the Offline Activation button.
4. A Registration ID is generated on this window. To generate the License Key, you need to send an email with both the Registration ID and the Activation Key that you receive after purchasing the software, to support@stellarinfo.com.
Note: You can also click on the Send button, to generate an email automatically with the Registration ID. Manually add the Activation Key to this email and send it to support@stellarinfo.com.
5. A Stellar representative will verify the details that you have sent and reply with a License Key upon successful verification.
6. Enter the License Key in the Offline Activation window and click Activate.
7. ‘Stellar Photo Recovery Activated Successfully’ message is displayed. Click OK.
3.6.Upgrading the Software
Stellar Photo Recovery provides you an option to upgrade your software to a higher edition to unlock more features. The editions are given below in descending order, with Technician being the most upgraded edition of Stellar Photo Recovery:
- Stellar Photo Recovery Technician edition
- Stellar Photo Recovery Premium edition
- Stellar Photo Recovery Professional edition
- Stellar Photo Recovery Standard edition
Example: If you have a Premium edition of Stellar Photo Recovery you can upgrade it to Technician.
To upgrade the software:
1. Run Stellar Photo Recovery software.
2. On the menu bar, click on Advanced Settings .
3. The Advanced Settings window will appear, click on the Upgrade button.
4. The Software Upgrade settings appear as shown below:
5. If you don’t have the Upgrade Key, click Get Upgrade Key link in the window to go online and purchase the product.
6. Type the Upgrade Key (received through email after purchasing the upgraded product) and click Upgrade button (Please ensure that you have an active Internet connection).
7. The software would automatically communicate with the license server to verify the entered key. If the key you entered is valid, the software will be upgraded successfully.
8. ‘Stellar Photo Recovery upgraded successfully‘ message is displayed after the process gets completed successfully. Click OK.
3.7.Updating the Software
Stellar Photo Recovery Update Wizard keeps your copy up-to-date. The wizard runs the update process and automatically checks for updates. You need an active internet connection to check for updates using Update option of the application.
To start Stellar Photo Recovery Update Wizard:
- Run Stellar Photo Recovery software.
- On the main screen, click Advanced Settings button
.
- In the Advanced Settings menu, click Update
button.
- From Updates dialog box select Check for Updates option.
- ‘Stellar Photo Recovery Update Wizard‘ window pops up. Click Next to proceed.
- The wizard will start searching for the latest updates and if it finds any new version, a window will pop up indicating the availability of an update.
- Click Next and the software will start downloading update files from the server. When the process is complete, the software will be updated to the latest version.
Live Update may not happen due to the following reasons:
- Internet connection failure
- Unable to download configuration files
- Unable to locate updated files or version
- Unable to locate executable file

4.Working with the Software
Stellar Photo Recovery recovers images and media files from storage devices. It first scans the preferred media and then recovers the files. You can save the scan information file to resume recovery at a later stage. Advanced options are provided to scan and recover files of a specific type. Working with Stellar Photo Recovery covers the following topics:
4.1.Recovering Data from Existing Volume
Stellar Photo Recovery helps you to recover all the supported images and media files. Recovery of all the files residing on the selected hard drive or recovery of selected files from the scanned result can be done using the software. Stellar Photo Recovery allows you to search, preview and save recovered photos and media files.
Stellar Photo Recovery can recover all media files of supported file formats. The software allows initiating the recovery process for a logical drive, physical disk, attached storage media, or a saved image file.
To Scan Existing Volume:
1. Run Stellar Photo Recovery.
2. On launching the software Recover Photo, Audio & Video screen is displayed. All the hard drives and media attached to the computer are listed. Select the desired volume, hard drive or external media from which you want to recover photo, audio & video files.
Tip: Stellar Photo Recovery shows you the temperature and health details of connected drives. To view these, take the mouse cursor to the particular drive in Recover Photo, Audio & Video screen. The Temperature and Health details are displayed inside a tooltip as shown below:
3. Click Scan. A screen showing the scanning process is displayed. Click Stop to stop the scan at any point.
Note: If you are scanning a drive that is encrypted using BitLocker, you will be prompted to either enter the Bitlocker password/Recovery Key or Select a Bitlocker Startup Key (.BEK file). Use any one of the following steps, to initiate the scan process:
- Enter the Bitlocker password/Recovery Key in the text box given and click OK.
- Alternatively, choose Select Bitlocker Startup Key (.BEK) radio button. Click
to browse and select the .BEK file and click OK.
4. Once the scanning process is completed, details of the files and folder found are displayed in a dialog box as shown below:

Deep Scan an Existing Volume:
Running a deep scan enables you to scan the selected volume thoroughly when you are unable to locate data that you want to recover.
1. Run Stellar Photo Recovery.
2. From Recover Photo, Audio & Video screen, select a drive from Connected Drives.
3. Enable Deep Scan toggle button which is on the bottom left of your screen.
4. Click Scan. A screen showing the scanning process is displayed.
Note: If you are scanning a drive that is encrypted using BitLocker, you will be prompted to either enter the Bitlocker password/Recovery Key or Select a Bitlocker Startup Key (.BEK file). Use any one of the following steps, to initiate the scan process:
- Enter the Bitlocker password/Recovery Key in the text box given and click OK.
- Alternatively, choose Select Bitlocker Startup Key (.BEK) radio button. Click
to browse and select the .BEK file and click OK.
5. Once the scanning process is completed, details of the files and folder found are displayed in a dialog box.

Note: If you wish to save the scanned information and resume the recovery process at a later stage, see Saving the Scan Information.
Note: You can select only one volume at a time for recovery. Deep scan is applicable only for connected drive. You can disable deep scan if you want to perform Quick scan.
4.2.Recovering Data from CD/DVD
A CD/DVD disk might become unreadable or corrupt due to a number of factors, such as heat, dust, scratches on the disk. Stellar Photo Recovery software can recover data from damaged CD-ROM, CD-RW, DVD and DVD-RW discs. Stellar Photo Recovery application supports recovery from corrupt optical media disks burnt on Windows, Linux, UNIX, and Macintosh systems. The application performs a scan on the selected optical media for recovery.
To scan CD/DVD:
1. Run Stellar Photo Recovery.
2. From Recover Photo, Audio & Video screen, select the connected CD/DVD drive from Connected Drives.
3. Click Scan. A screen showing the scanning process is displayed. Click Stop to stop the scan at any point.
4. Once the scanning process is completed, details of the files and folder found are displayed in a dialog box as shown below:

Note: You can select only one CD/DVD at a time for recovery.
4.3.Working with Disk Images
Disk Image is a mirror image of any storage device from which you wish to recover data, such as ”Internal or External Hard Disks”, ”Pen Drives”, ”Volumes”, ”Storage Cards” etc. When you create an image, scanning process is not performed; instead a copy of the selected source is saved as IMG file. You can start recovery either after completion of drive imaging or at later time, see Recovering Data from Existing Image.
Stellar Photo Recovery allows you to recover data from any previously created disk images or create a disk image of any drive, partition or volume and perform the recovery process on the newly created image.
4.3.1.Creating an Image File
You can create an image of different storage devices and save them as IMG file by using the Create Image option of Stellar Photo Recovery. The storage devices whose image you can create are:
- Hard Disks
- Existing logical volumes in hard disks
- Removable media such as pen drives, external hard disks etc.
Images, of all sources listed earlier, are saved as IMG file. The image you create by using Stellar Photo Recovery will be of same size as the selected hard disk, pen drive, or volume. Ensure that the location where image file needs to be saved has sufficient space to store the image file.
To create image file of hard disk, volume, or removable media:
1. Run Stellar Photo Recovery software.
2. From the menu bar, click on Resume Recovery button and select Create Image.
3. From Create Image screen, select the drive or partition for which you wish to create an image.
4. To create image of the entire drive or partition click Start Imaging. Or, To create image of selected region click on Advanced Settings. From ‘Select Range to Create Image‘ screen drag the sliders to define starting and ending sectors of the image file. Click Close, and then click Start Imaging.
5. In ‘Create Media Image to Save‘ dialog box, locate the destination where image file should be saved. In the File Name text box, type name. Click Save.
6. After the process gets completed, a screen as given below appears, which shows the newly created image.
7. Click Scan to start the recovery process.
8. A screen showing the scanning process is displayed. Click Stop to stop the scan at any point.
9. Once the scanning process is completed, details of the files and folder found are displayed in a dialog box as shown below:

Note: If you wish to save the scanned information and resume the recovery process at a later stage, see Saving the Scan Information.
Tip: It is recommended that you should save ‘scan information file’ and ‘hard disk image’ at different locations with a proper name such that you can easily retrieve the required image file.
4.3.2.Recovering Data from Existing Image
With Stellar Photo Recovery you can perform the recovery operation on a newly created disk image using Create Image option or on any previously created disk image.
To recover data using any disk image:
1. Run Stellar Photo Recovery software.
2. From the menu bar, click on Resume Recovery button and select Load Image.
3. All the disk images are listed on Recovery from Image screen with their respective sizes. If the image is not listed, click on Add to browse and select the image file.
4. To remove an image from the list, select that image and click Remove. Click Reset, to restore the list to default.
5. Select the desired image file and click Scan to start the recovery process.
Note: If you are scanning a drive that is encrypted using BitLocker, you will be prompted to either enter the Bitlocker password/Recovery Key or Select a Bitlocker Startup Key (.BEK file). Use any one of the following steps, to initiate the scan process:
- Enter the Bitlocker password/Recovery Key in the text box given and click OK.
- Alternatively, choose Select Bitlocker Startup Key (.BEK) radio button. Click
to browse and select the .BEK file and click OK.
6. A screen showing the scanning process is displayed. Click Stop to stop the scan at any point.
7. Once the scanning process is completed, details of the files and folder found are displayed in a dialog box as shown below:

Note: You can select only one image at a time for recovery.
4.4.Previewing Scan Results
Stellar Photo Recovery shows the preview of the files and folders present in the scanned physical volume or the removable media. All files and folders that are found in the scanned volume or removable media are shown in a three-pane structure. The three panes are the left, top-right, and the bottom-right pane.
- In the left-pane, a tree structure according to folders is created.
- Top right-pane shows preview of files that are supported by the software.
- In bottom-right pane, all files and folders that are in the selected folder in the tree view are listed.
To preview a file:
1. After the scanning process is completed, all the files are listed in a Preview window as shown below:
2. Click a tab in the left pane.
- File Type: In this view, files/folders are listed according to their type such as Photos, Audio, Video.
- Tree View: In this view, folders are listed in a hierarchical arrangement.
- Deleted List: All the files and folders deleted from the drive are listed in this view.
3. Click a folder in the left pane to list files of that folder in the bottom right pane.
4. Double-click the folder to move deeper into the folder.
5. Click a file in the bottom-right pane to preview the file. Only supported files can be previewed.
Note: If you can’t find your desired file/folder in the list of scanned and detected files, you can choose Deep Scan option to perform a comprehensive scan of the selected drive or location.
4.5.Saving the Recovered Files
Stellar Photo Recovery can recover all files of supported file formats. You can save files and folders listed under the preview section at a location of your choice.
To recover lost files:
1. From the Preview window, select the files and folders you want to recover. You can narrow the search result by selecting only specific files or type of files to view or recover from the File Type tab or to recover deleted files select the files from the Deleted List.
- To search for specific files
- Enter the name of the file in Search Files field
and press Enter. To move to the next found entry click
or press CTRL + G
- Enter the name of the file in Search Files field
- To save all files
- Check the root node in the left pane and then click Recover or from the file list pane select the check box besides the File Name tab and then click Recover.
- To save individual files
- Click a folder in the left pane to view files stored in it.
- Check the files in the bottom right pane and then click Recover.
- To recover an individual file
- Right-Click the file in the file-list and select Recover.
- To recover files of specific category:
- Click File Type List Check the File Types category folders as per your choice. The files of the selected ‘file types folders‘ will be listed in the file list pane. You can select the individual files in the list.
- Click Recover.
2. A Recover dialog box is displayed. Click Browse to select a destination to save data or click on Advanced Settings to configure advanced recovery options. Specify the destination and choose the options as per requirement.
3. Click Start Saving to start saving process. If the destination files have same names then you can overwrite, rename or skip. Choose as per the case.
The selected files will be recovered and saved at the specified location. Navigate to the destination to view files.
4.5.1.Using Advanced Recovery Options
Stellar Photo Recovery lets you configure the recovery options while saving the files. With Advanced Settings, you can
- Apply Compression
- Change Recovery Option
- Specify file filters
Apply Compression
You can save recovered files in compressed zip folders. However, compression can be applied only if recovered files are being saved to a local disk or drive.
To apply compression:
- From the Advanced Options select Compression Option.
- Check the Create zip file check box. Select:
- Zip each file individually: This option saves all selected files in their corresponding zip folder.
- Zip to a single file: This option saves all recovered files in a single zip folder.
- Click OK.
Change Recovery Option
This section is shown when all the files and folders are selected for recovery. You can choose to exclude or include the deleted files while recovery.
To change recovery option:
- From the Advanced Options select Recovery Option.
- Select any one of the following options:
- All files & folders (Exclude deleted): Choose this option to exclude the deleted files while recovering the selected files and folders.
- All files & folders (Include deleted): Choose this option to include the deleted files and folders while recovering the selected files and folders.
- Only deleted files & folders: Choose this option to recover only deleted files and folders.
- Click OK.
Specify Filters
You can add a filter according to your requirement.
To apply filter:
- From the Advanced Options select Add Filter.
- Select a group of file types from the drop down box and click Add button, to include it in the list.
- To remove any extension from the list select the extension and click Remove button.
- Select Include these files only to include the listed file types during recovery or Exclude these files only to leave the listed file types during recovery. Click OK.
4.6.Performing a Deep Scan
Deep Scan allows you to recover data from hard disk, pen drive or volumes of a hard disk. It does a comprehensive scan of the volume to recover each and every bit of lost or deleted data. It searches for lost files on the basis of file signature. This recovery option recovers everything that is found in the selected source. This option is especially helpful in case of severely corrupted volume.
In case, after the quick scan process is completed and your desired file is not included in the list of files detected, you can opt for Deep Scan to perform a comprehensive scan of the selected drive or location.
To perform Deep Scan:
1. Once quick scan is completed, in the preview window choose Click Here option given at the bottom of the window to start Deep Scan.
2. A screen showing the scanning process is displayed. Click Stop to stop the scan at any point.
3. Once the scanning process is completed, a dialog box showing the number of files and folders found during Deep Scan is displayed.

Note: If you wish to save the scanned information and resume the recovery process at a later stage, see Saving the Scan Information.
4.7.Saving the Scan Information
You can save scan result of any scanning process as DAT file. You can save scan result of a complete or incomplete recovery process.
Saving scan information saves your time. You can resume recovery by selecting the DAT file without scanning the drive again.
To save scan information:
1. In the ‘Scan Results‘ window, click on the Resume Recovery button and select Save Scan.
Tip: The software prompts you to save the scan information when you click on Back or Home button or you try to close the software. You can also save the scan information using the prompt.
2. In ‘Save scan information‘ dialog box, browse to the location where the file should be saved. Type the name of the file in the File name text box and click Save.
For information about resuming the recovery session, see Resuming Recovery from Saved Scan Information.
Note: Scan Information file will be saved with DAT extension.
Note: If you stopped a scanning process, you can save scan information up to that point. However, you should perform complete scan, and then save scan result.
Tip: It is recommended that you should save ‘scan information file’ and ‘hard disk image’ at different locations with proper name such that you can easily retrieve the required DAT file.
4.8.Configuring Advanced Settings
Advanced Settings can be configured to run Stellar Photo Recovery according to personal requirement. This option make this software exceptional and easy to operate.
To set advanced settings:
1. Run Stellar Photo Recovery.
2. From the menu bar, click Advanced Settings button. Using this you can configure following settings:
- To set preference for preview window, click Preview
button
- To select file types for recovery, click File list
button
- To set preferences for file type, click Add File Type
button
- To resume a recovery process, click Resume Recovery
button
- To check for updates, click Updates
button
- To activate the software offline, click Offline Activation
button (Only available if the software is not activated)
- To upgrade the software, click Upgrade
button (Only available if the software is activated)
- To change the software language, click Languages

4.8.1.Preview Settings
Preview option allows you to apply settings for preview window of the application.
To apply preview settings:
1. Run Stellar Photo Recovery.
2. From the menu bar, click Advanced Settings button.
3. The Preview tab is selected by default. If not, select the Preview tab in the Advanced Settings window.
4. Use the toggle button to Switch Off or Switch On the preview of files during the scanning process.
5. Check or Uncheck Preview corrupt photos in safe mode option as per your choice and click Close to save the settings.
4.8.2.Selecting File Formats
File types give information about the type of file such as video, audio and its extension. You can select file types while performing signature search such that, scanning process should search only for the specified file types. Various file types are listed in the file list option of Stellar Photo Recovery. You can select the required file types for their recovery.
To select file type:
1. Run Stellar Photo Recovery software.
2. Click Advanced Settings button.
3. Click File List button from Advanced Settings window.
4. A list of all supported file formats is shown. Select the file types you want to recover using the checkbox in front of the file type.
4.8.3.Adding or Editing File Formats
Stellar Photo Recovery allows you to add additional file types apart from those already mentioned in File Lists. Using Add File Type option you can add a new file type or edit an existing file type to facilitate the recovery process.
Add File Type include following options:
- To add new file types manually or automatically, click Add File Type button.
- To edit size of existing file types, click Edit File Type button.
Add File Type
You can add new file types to the predefined list of supported file types in Stellar Photo Recovery using Add File Type functionality in Advanced Settings window.
You can add header either
- Automatically
- Manually
To add File Type automatically:
1. Run Stellar Photo Recovery.
2. Click Advanced Settings button.
3. Click Add File Type button from Advanced Settings window.
4. Select ‘I don’t know how to add file type‘.
5. Click Add button to browse to the location of file type you want to add.
6. You need to add at least 10 or more sample files of the same type to include it in the list of supported file types.
7. Name of the added file type will be listed in the left hand side box.
8. Type in header file name in the dialog box and then select the header file type from Select Group drop down list and the size from Put Average File Size text box.
9. Click Add File Type button.
To add file type manually:
1. Run Stellar Photo Recovery.
2. Click Advanced Settings button.
3. Click Add File Type button from Advanced Settings window.
4. Select ‘I know how to add file type‘.
5. Enter the following:
- Specify Software Name.
- Specify File Extension.
- Select Group from the drop down list.
- Specify Max File Size in KB and MB.
- Specify Header in hexadecimal.
- Specify At Offset in decimal.
6. Click Add File Type button.
Edit File Type
You can also edit an existing file type or newly added file type. You can change every setting of the file type.
To change size of supported file types/remove added file types:
1. Run Stellar Photo Recovery.
2. Click Advanced Settings button.
3. Click Add File Type button from Advanced Settings window.
4. Select Edit File Type tab.
5. Select the desired file type from the list and enter the new size of file type in Put New Average Size box.
6. Click Edit Size button to save the size for your file type.
7. Click Remove button in case you want to delete the selected file type from list.
4.8.4.Resuming Recovery from Saved Scan Information
Scan Information file contains information of a scan and is saved as a DAT file. You can save scan information file during any complete or incomplete recovery process. DAT file can be used to restart recovery later. For example, you saved DAT file of a scanning process and recovered only some files from that scan result. Later, you want to recover some more files from the same drive. You can use the saved DAT file to restart recovery.
Using a scan information file saves time, since scanning of each file does not take place. All files and folders shown after scan process will be shown on loading the DAT file created for that scan. In addition, if you have performed scanning process but not saved any files then you can use the DAT file to restart recovery at some other time.
To resume recovery by using scan information file:
1. Run Stellar Photo Recovery.
2. From the menu bar, click Resume Recovery button and select Resume Scan. Alternatively, click Advanced Settings button
and click Resume Recovery
tab from Advanced Settings window.
3. All the saved scan information files (.DAT) are listed on the Resume Recovery window. If the file is not listed, click on Add to browse and select the file.
4. To remove a file from the list, select that file and click Remove. Click Reset, to restore the list to default.
5. Select the desired file and click Resume Recovery to resume the recovery process.
Note: If you are scanning a drive that is encrypted using BitLocker, you will be prompted to either enter the Bitlocker password/Recovery Key or Select a Bitlocker Startup Key (.BEK file). Use any one of the following steps, to initiate the scan process:
- Enter the Bitlocker password/Recovery Key in the text box given and click OK.
- Alternatively, choose Select Bitlocker Startup Key (.BEK) radio button. Click
to browse and select the .BEK file and click OK.
6. A screen showing the scanning process is displayed. Click Stop to stop the scan at any point.
7. Once the scanning process is completed, details of the files and folder found are displayed in a dialog box as shown below:

4.8.5.Changing the Software Language
In order to use Stellar Photo Recovery software in your preferred language, the application provides an option to select any of the desired language. Using the Languages button in Advanced Settings dialog, you can change the entire application to a different language at any time/instance without having to re-install the application.
In order to change language of the application instantly, go through the following steps:
- Run Stellar Photo Recovery.
- Click Advanced Settings
button.
- Click Languages
button from Advanced Settings window.
- From the options displayed, select the required language.

Can I activate the Stellar Photo Recovery offline?
Yes, in case you are facing issues with the online activation of Stellar Photo Recovery or do not have an internet connection, you can activate the software offline. See Activating the Software for more details.
Can I upgrade my edition of Stellar Photo Recovery software?
Yes, you can upgrade your edition of Stellar Photo Recovery software to a higher edition. See Upgrading the Software for more details.
What is quick scan and deep scan?
Quick scan is a faster scanning option. If the files are not recovered still, then you can use deep scan. Performing Deep scan is a bit slower but results are better than quick scan.
How much time Stellar Photo Recovery will take to recover data?
The recovery time depends upon the size of the hard disk or volume. If the process is running that means that software is still scanning the deleted files and you have to wait for recovery process to complete. Once the process is complete you can save the recovered file at any selected location.
Can I recover data from my exFAT partition?
Yes, you can recover data from exFAT partition. Stellar Photo Recovery software supports NTFS, FAT, FAT16, FAT32, exFAT, Ext2, Ext3, Ext4, HFS, HFS+, and APFS file systems.
How to find only a particular file type and recover them?
You can search for a specific file in the preview window or from File Type List tab check the File Types category folders as per your choice. The files of the selected ‘file types folders‘ will be listed in the file list pane. Select the files and click Recover. The files are saved at the selected destination.
How can I recover only deleted data?
There are two methods with which you can recover only the deleted data:
- Using the Deleted List tab in the preview window: After scanning, the software shows preview of all the data that can be recovered. To recover only the deleted data, select the files from the Deleted List tab of the preview window. See Previewing Scanned Results for more details.
- Using Advanced Recovery Options: The software provides an option to filter only the deleted files and folders while saving. See ‘Change Recovery Option’ in Using Advanced Recovery Options for more details.
What is create image, why do I need it?
Using the Create Image File option of Stellar Photo Recovery you can create an image of different storage devices and save them as IMG file. This IMG file can be used to resume the recovery process at a later stage. Creating an image of the hard disk is especially helpful to recover data from a faulty hard drive having a lot of bad sectors.
What is BitLocker? Does Stellar Photo Recovery support BitLocker?
BitLocker is a full volume encryption feature included with Microsoft Windows (Pro and Enterprise only) versions starting with Windows 7. It is designed to protect data by providing encryption for entire volumes. Stellar Photo Recovery supports BitLocker. You can recover data from encrypted drives either by entering the Bitlocker password/Recovery Key or by providing a Bitlocker Startup Key (.BEK file) at the time of scanning the drive.
I have accidentally formatted my camera. How can I recover the data?
If you have accidentally formatted your camera or the memory card, you need to follow the steps below to recover your data:
- Connect your camera to your computer and run Stellar Photo Recovery software.
- Select the camera or the memory card from the list.
- Click on the Scan button.
- The software starts scanning the media and shows you a preview of the files that you can recover successfully.
- Select the files which you want to recover and click on Recover button to save the files on a different hard-drive.
I have deleted my pictures. How can I recover them?
If you have deleted your pictures from your storage media, our software can recover that data. Kindly follow the underlying steps:
- Connect your storage media to your computer and run Stellar Photo Recovery software.
- Select the media or the memory card from the list. You can select a specific region and specific file types for the scanning process by clicking on the Advanced Settings button.
- Click on the Scan button.
- The software starts scanning the media and shows you a preview of the files that you can recover successfully.
- Select the files which you want to recover and click on Recover button to save the file on a different hard-drive.
I have created an image of the drive using the software. How do I scan the image file?
1. Run Stellar Photo Recovery software.
2. From the menu bar, click on Resume Recovery button and select Load Image.
3. Click on an image that you want to scan.
4. Click Continue button after selecting the image.
Does my card need to be connected to the system till the time of the recovery?
Yes. It is essential to not remove your media during the scan or recovery. Media should only be detached once the recovery process completes
How to recover data from a drive that contains bad sectors?
You can create the image of the drive which is a sector by sector copy of the drive to a file. This process creates an image of readable sectors through which you can recover the data quickly.
Why do I receive this error message while using saved scan information file for recovery of data “Please make sure to connect the media whose scan information is being used for recovery”?
This error message appears if you have removed the media after saving the scan information. You need to re-scan your drive to get complete recovery.
Can the software repair the images that are not opening after the recovery?
The software is a recovery application and cannot repair any corrupted images. The data is recovered in the same form as it is available in the media.
I am not able to see my camera in the software. What am I doing wrong?
There is a possibility that your camera does not support access to the memory card as a disk drive. You need to attach the memory card through a card reader for accessing the memory card, and this enables you to scan your camera memory card.
When I am trying to recover the data, I get error “Source and destination are same.”. What shall I do?
You are trying to save the data on the same media from where you are recovering it. Please choose another location to save the files.

1. Definitions.
1.1.“Stellar” means Stellar Information Technology Pvt. Ltd., having its registered office at 205, Skipper Corner, 88, Nehru Place, New Delhi, India 110019.
1.2. “Compatible Computer” means a Computer with the recommended operating system and hardware configuration as stated in the Documentation.
1.3. “Computer” means a virtual or physical device that accepts information in digital or similar form and manipulates it for a specific result based on a sequence of instructions, including without limitation desktop computers, laptops, tablets, mobile devices, telecommunication devices, Internet-connected devices, and hardware products capable of operating a wide variety of productivity, entertainment, or other software applications.
1.4. “Customer” means you and any legal entity that obtained the Software and on whose behalf it is used; for example, and as applicable, your employer.
1.5. “Permitted Number” means one (1) unless otherwise indicated under a valid license (e.g., volume license) granted by Stellar.
1.6. “Software” means (a) all of the information with which this agreement is provided, including but not limited to: (i) all software files and other computer information; (ii) any proprietary scripting logic embedded within exported file formats (iii)images, sounds, clip art, video and other works bundled with Stellar software or made available by Stellar on Stellar’s website for use with the Stellar software and not obtained from Stellar through a separate service (unless otherwise noted within that service) or from another party (“Content Files”); (iv) related explanatory written materials and files (“Documentation”); and (v) any modified versions and copies of, and upgrades, updates, and additions to, such information, provided to Customer by Stellar at any time, to the extent not provided under separate terms (collectively, “Updates”).
2. LICENSE GRANT; PROPRIETARY RIGHTS.
Right to use the Software: Subject to the terms and conditions of this Agreement, Stellar grants Customer a non-exclusive, non-transferable right, revocable and limited license to access and use the Software and Documentation on a single computer or workstation in a single location for your personal purposes (if you are a consumer) or your internal business purposes (if you are a business user) subject to the terms stated below. Customer must use the Technician License if using the software to provide professional or paid service to a third party (individual or company) and / or for any commercial purposes.
SINGLE USER LICENSE. The term means a SOFTWARE that may be installed and used only by a single USER on a single computer at any one time. Consequently, the SOFTWARE must not be installed, displayed, shared or used concurrently from the computer or on distinct computers. Single User License is granted to customer who is using STANDARD, PROFESSIONAL, PREMIUM or CORPORATE Edition of the Software.
MULTIPLE USER LICENSE. The term means a SOFTWARE that may be installed and used by a specified number of USERS representing an equivalent number of computers. The SOFTWARE must not be installed, displayed, shared or used from or on a number of computers greater than the number of workstations authorized. Multiple User License are associated with Technician & Toolkit Edition of the Software. MAXIMUM Installation and usage limit of this License in on 3 Computers.
3. LICENSE TYPES.
3.1. Evaluation Software/Trial version: The Software is provided with or without License key which can be downloaded for free from Stellar’s website. The Software may only be installed and used on Permitted Number of Compatible Computers during the License Term for demonstration, evaluation, and training purposes only. Evaluation Software or Trial version of the Software may be freely distributed, if the distribution package is not modified. No person or company may charge a fee for the distribution of trial version without written permission from the copyright holder.
3.2. Subscription License: For the Software available on a subscription-basis (“Subscription License”), Customer may install and use the Subscription License only on the Permitted Number of Compatible Computer during the License Term Period. Subject to the Permitted Number of Computers for the Subscription License, Customer agrees that Stellar may change the type of Software (such as specific components, versions, platforms, languages, etc.) included in the Subscription License at any time and shall not be liable to the Customer whatsoever for such change. Ongoing access to a Subscription License requires a recurring Internet connection to activate, renew, and validate the license. If Stellar does not receive the recurring subscription payment or cannot validate the license periodically, then the Software may become inactive without additional notice until Stellar receives the payment or validates the license.
3.3. Lifetime License: Once registered, user is granted an exclusive license to use the Software for maximum period of 10 years on the same computer with same configuration and operating system which is compatible with the software. If the computer hardware or software is changed during the lifetime of the license which is not compatible with the original purchased version; then user may need to additionally purchase the upgraded version of the software.
4. SOFTWARE SUPPORT.
Support will only be provided to only license customer for a period of 1 Year from the date of purchase. Queries regarding the installation and use of the software should be submitted by e-mail which get responded usually within 24 Business Hours. Free Technical Support is provided for 1 Year from the date of purchase, if your license term is greater than 1 year then you may avail Technical Support by paying additional fee applicable at that time. Paid support can be purchased for Lifetime License only up to a maximum period of next 2 years. Stellar will not assist customers for any support request related to the Software after 3 years from the purchase of the software.
5. INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY OWNERSHIP.
The Software and any authorized copies that Customer makes are the intellectual property of and are owned by Stellar. The structure, organization, and source code of the Software are the valuable trade secrets and confidential information of Stellar Information Technology Pvt. Ltd. The Software is protected by law, including but not limited to the copyright laws of the United States and other countries, and by international treaty provisions. Except as expressly stated herein, this agreement does not grant Customer any intellectual property rights in the Software. All rights not expressly granted are reserved by Stellar.
6. RESTRICTIONS & REQUIREMENTS.
6.1 Proprietary Notices. Any permitted copy of the Software (including without limitation Documentation) that Customer makes must contain the same copyright and other proprietary notices that appear on or in the Software.
6.2 Use Obligations. Customer agrees that it will not use the Software other than as permitted by this agreement and that it will not use the Software in a manner inconsistent with its design or Documentation.
6.3 No Modifications. Customer shall not modify, adapt, tamper with, translate or create Derivative Works of the Software or the Documentation; combine or merge any part of the Software or Documentation with or into any other software or documentation; or refer to or otherwise use the Software as part of any effort to develop software (including any routine, script, code, or program) having any functional attributes, visual expressions or other features similar to those of the Software to compete with Stellar;
except with Stellar’s prior written permission, publish any performance or benchmark tests or analysis relating to the Software;
6.4 No Reverse Engineering. Customer shall not reverse engineer, decompile, disassemble, or otherwise attempt to discover the source code of the Software.
6.5 No Unbundling. The Software may include various applications and components, may allow access to different Stellar Online Channels, may support multiple platforms and languages, and may be provided to Customer on multiple media or in multiple copies. Nonetheless, the Software is designed and provided to Customer as a single product to be used as a single product on Computers as permitted herein. Unless otherwise permitted in the Documentation, Customer is not required to install all component parts of the Software, but Customer shall not unbundle the component parts of the Software for use on different Computers.
6.6 Customer will not remove, erase, obscure or tamper with any copyright or any other product identification or proprietary rights notices, seal or instructional label printed or stamped on, affixed to, or encoded or recorded in or on any Software or Documentation; or fail to preserve all copyright and other proprietary notices in all copies Company makes of the Software and Documentation;
6.7 Customer will not run or operate the Software in a cloud, Internet-based computing or similar on-demand computing environment unless Company’s Grant Letter or the applicable Product Entitlement Definitions specifically allows the use.
6.8 No Transfer. Customer will not rent, lease, sell, sublicense, assign, or transfer its rights in the software (including without limitation, software obtained through a web download), or authorize any portion of the software to be copied onto another individual or legal entity’s computer except as may be expressly permitted herein.
7. COPYRIGHT/OWNERSHIP.
Customer acknowledges that all intellectual property rights in the Software and the Documentation anywhere in the world belong to, or are licensed to Stellar. The rights granted to you in the Software are licensed (not sold), and you have no rights in, or to, the Software or the Documentation other than the right to use them in accordance with the terms of this License. The Software, its source code and Documentation are proprietary products of Stellar Information Technology Pvt. Ltd. (“Stellar”) to provide the License and are protected by copyright and other intellectual property laws. Stellar shall at all times retain all rights, title, interest, including intellectual property rights, in the Software or Documentation.
8. WARRANTIES.
The licensed software (excluding the media on which it is distributed) and all Stellar related websites and services are provided to licensee ‘AS IS’ and “AS AVAILABLE,” and Stellar and its suppliers and licensors make NO WARRANTY as to their use or performance. Stellar and its suppliers and licensors make NO WARRANTIES OR REPRESENTATIONS (express or implied, whether by statute, common law, custom, usage, or otherwise) as to any matter including without limitation to quality, availability, performance or functionality of the licensed software or any related Stellar websites or services; quality or accuracy of any information obtained from or available through use of the licensed software or related Stellar websites or services; any representation or warranty that the use of the licensed software or any related Stellar websites or services will be uninterrupted or always available (whether due to internet failure or otherwise), error-free, free of viruses or other harmful components or operate on or with any particular hardware, platform or software; non-infringement of third-party rights, merchantability, integration, satisfactory quality, or fitness for any particular purpose, except for, and only to the extent, that a warranty may not be excluded or limited by applicable law in licensee’s jurisdiction.

You understand that by using the Licensed Software, you consent and agree to the collection and use of certain information about you and your use of the Licensed Software in accordance with Stellar’s Privacy Policy. You further consent and agree that Stellar may collect, use, transmit, process and maintain information related to your Account, and any devices or computers registered thereunder, for purposes of providing the Licensed Software, and any features therein, to you. Information collected by Stellar when you use the Licensed Software may also include technical or diagnostic information related to your use that may be used by Stellar to support, improve and enhance Stellar’s products and services. 10. INTERNET CONNECTIVITY & PRIVACY.
10.1 Automatic Connections to the Internet. The Software may cause Customer’s Computer, without notice, to automatically connect to the Internet and to communicate with Stellar website or Stellar domain for purposes such as license validation and providing Customer with additional information, features, or functionality. Unless otherwise specified in Sections 10.2 through 10.5, the following provisions apply to all automatic Internet connections by the Software:
10.1.1 Whenever the Software makes an Internet connection and communicates with a Stellar website, whether automatically or due to explicit user request, the Privacy Policy shall apply. Stellar Privacy Policy allows tracking of website visits and it addresses in detail the topic of tracking and use of cookies, web beacons, and similar devices.
10.1.2 Whenever the Software connects to Stellar over the Internet, certain Customer information is collected and transmitted by the Software to Stellar pursuant to the Stellar Online Privacy Policy available at https://www.stellarinfo.com/ under Privacy Policy section.
10.1.3 If Customer accesses Stellar Online Service or activates or registers the Software, then additional information such as Customer’s ID, user name, and password may be transmitted to and stored by Stellar pursuant to the Privacy Policy and additional terms of use related to such Stellar Online Service.
10.1.4 Stellar, unless barred under applicable law, may (a) send Customer transactional messages to facilitate the Stellar Online Service or the activation or registration of the Software or Stellar Online Service, or (b) deliver in-product marketing to provide information about the Software and other Stellar products and Services using information including but not limited to platform version, version of the Software, license status, and language.
10.2 Updating. The Software may cause Customer’s Computer, without additional notice, to automatically connect to the Internet (intermittently or on a regular basis) to (a) check for Updates that are available for download to and installation on the Computer and (b) notify Stellar of the results of installation attempts.
10.3 Activation. The Software may require Customer to (a) obtain Stellar Software Activation Key, (b) activate or reactivate the Software, (c) register the software, or (d) validate the Ownership. Such requirement may cause Customer’s Computer to connect to the Internet without notice on install, on launch, and on a regular basis thereafter. Once connected, the Software will collect and transmit information to Stellar. Software or Customer may also receive information from Stellar related to Customer’s license, subscription, or Ownership. Stellar may use such information to detect or prevent fraudulent or unauthorized use not in accordance with a valid license, subscription, or Ownership. Failure to activate or register the Software, validate the subscription or Ownership, or a determination by Stellar of fraudulent or unauthorized use of the Software may result in reduced functionality, inoperability of the Software, or a termination or suspension of the subscription or Ownership.
10.4 Use of Online Services. The Software may cause Customer’s Computer, without additional notice and on an intermittent or regular basis, to automatically connect to the Internet to facilitate Customer’s access to content and services that are provided by Stellar or third parties. In addition, the Software may, without additional notice, automatically connect to the Internet to update downloadable materials from these online services so as to provide immediate availability of these services even when Customer is offline.
10.5 Digital Certificates. The Software uses digital certificates to help Customer identify downloaded files (e.g., applications and/or content) and the publishers of those files. For example, Stellar uses digital certificates to help Customer identify the publisher of Stellar applications. Customer’s Computer may connect to the Internet at the time of validation of a digital certificate.
11. LIMITATION OF LIABILITY
In no event shall Stellar or its suppliers be liable for any special, incidental, indirect, or consequential damages whatsoever (including, without limitation, damages for loss of business profits, business interruption, loss of business information, or any other pecuniary loss) arising out of the use of or inability to use the software product or the provision of or failure to provide support services, even if Stellar has been advised of the possibility of such damages. In any case, Stellar’s entire liability under any provision shall be limited to the amount actually paid by you for the software product or a sum of US Dollars Five whichever is higher.
12. TERMINATION
If Customer breaches this EULA, and fails to cure any breach within 30 calendar days after request from Stellar, Stellar may terminate this EULA, whereupon all rights granted to Customer shall immediately cease including but not limited to the license granted to the customer to use the software which shall also stand revoked. Furthermore, upon termination, Customer shall return to Stellar all copies of the Licensed Software, or verify in writing that all copies of the Licensed Software have been destroyed and failure of the customer to do so would entitle Stellar to sue for relief in equity and damages.
13. JURISDICTION AND LAW
13.1 This EULA is subject to, and will be governed by and construed in accordance with the substantive laws applicable to the state of Delhi (India). Courts at Delhi, India alone shall have the jurisdiction to entertain any dispute arising out of the terms and conditions of this EULA and you consent to such jurisdiction of the courts at Delhi, India.
13.2 This EULA will not be governed by the conflict of law rules of any jurisdiction, or the United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods, the application of which is expressly excluded.
14. GENERAL
14.1 This License is the complete statement of the agreement between the parties on the subject matter and merges and supersedes all other or prior understandings, purchase orders, agreements and arrangements.
14.2 The exclusions of warranties and liability limitations shall survive the termination of this EULA, howsoever caused; but this survival shall not imply or create any continued right to use the Licensed Software after termination of this EULA.
14.3 Licensee shall not ship, transfer, or export Licensed Software into any country or use Licensed Software in any manner prohibited by the applicable export control laws, notably where applicable, the United States Export Administration Act, restrictions, or regulations (collectively the ‘Export Laws’.) All rights to use the Licensed Software are granted on condition that Licensee complies with the Export Laws, and all such rights are forfeited if Licensee fails to comply with the Export Laws.
14.4 Stellar reserves all rights not expressly granted to Licensee by this EULA All rights are reserved under the copyright laws of India and/or of other countries, to Stellar Information Technology Pvt Ltd, having its registered office at 205, Skipper Corner, 88, Nehru Place, New Delhi, India 110019.
14.5 There are no third party beneficiaries of any promises, obligations or representations made by Stellar herein.
14.6 Any waiver by Stellar of any violation of this License by you shall not constitute nor contribute to a waiver by Stellar of any other or future violation of the same provision or any other provision of this License.
14.7 This EULA constitutes the entire agreement between you and Stellar and it supersedes all prior or contemporaneous representations, discussions, undertakings, communications, agreements, arrangements, advertisements, and understandings regulating the Licensed Software. This EULA is binding on and made for the benefit of the parties and their successors and permitted assigns.
14.8 This EULA may only be modified, supplemented or amended by a writing signed by an authorized officer of Stellar.
