How to Recover Deleted DCIM Folder from (Android & Camera SD Cards)
Summary:
If the DCIM folder doesn’t appear when you connect your Android phone or an SD card to the computer, it means it is either hidden or deleted. If there was accidental deletion, try restoring the photos from the Gallery app’s Recently Deleted or File Manager’s trash folder, or from cloud backup.
- To recover DCIM folder from an SD card, go to your file manager and see if the folder needs to be unhidden. Another way to make the DCIM folder visible is to run chkdsk command in Windows to fix any file system errors. If you have accidentally deleted the DCIM folder, a photo recovery tool can help recover it.
- To restore DCIM folder from an Android phone’s internal storage, uninstall any privacy vault apps, if pre-installed. Or, search for the .nomedia file inside your storage, and delete it to see if the hidden DCIM folder appears. If nothing works, an Android data recovery tool is worth a try.
The DCIM (abbrv.. for Digital Camera Images) folder is the one place where your phone or SD card stores every photo and video you ever captured. When the DCIM folder goes missing, it’s likely that the device’s Gallery or album is either hidden or is accidentally deleted. In this case, the DCIM files remain in your storage device but they are simply no longer visible or accessible normally. But don’t worry, there are other ways to easily re-access the DCIM folder.
This guide explains why the DCIM folder sometimes disappears from your device, and how to recover it.

Recover Missing or Deleted DCIM Folder on an SD card
If you use an SD card on your camera or Android phone, and the DCIM folder goes missing, it doesn’t mean it is gone permanently. The folder may have got hidden, accidentally trashed, or corrupted and you can restore it to its previous state. Let’s find out how to recover SD card DCIM folder.
Method 1: Find hidden DCIM folder on your SD card
Sometimes, while trying to hide a specific folder (like a private downloads folder), users accidentally hide the complete DCIM folder. To find the hidden folder, you simply need to change your device’s view settings to “show hidden files.”
- Go to the File Explorer Menu and click on View, then Select the Hidden items.
- You can also select Show > Hidden items on Windows 11.
Your hidden folder including DCIM would be now visible.
Method 2: Run chkdsk to fix file system corruption
Sometimes, your DCIM folder disappears from the SD card because of a logical or file system error, or a bad sector. When that happens, your device may prompt you to format the SD card to fix corruption. Let’s not do that as formatting will wipe out everything from the card. Instead, you can use a built-in Windows tool, chkdsk, to fix the card’s internal structure.
Note: If the DCIM files are irreplaceable, run a recovery software (or image the card) first, then repair. Also, chkdsk may dump orphaned fragments into a FOUND.000 folder as .CHK files.
- Connect the SD card into your Windows PC (use a card reader if there’s no SD card slot). Make sure to close all SD card files and folders before running chkdsk.
- Type cmd into your Windows search bar, right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator.
- Type this exact command, replacing the letter F: with whatever drive letter your SD card is currently using: chkdsk F: /f /r
- Press Enter. Windows will automatically scan the card, identify the file system errors, and fix your DCIM folder.
Once it’s done, open your file explorer, and your DCIM folder photos should be there. You may need to unmount the SD card if the scan gets interrupted by any other background process.
Method 3: Use a Free Photo Recovery Tool on Windows
If your DCIM folder is permanently deleted and cannot be found after trying the above fixes, it’s time to try Stellar Photo Recovery. A free recovery tool built for exactly such scenarios where photos/videos or the entire DCIM folder gets lost or deleted from a storage device. The free photo recovery tool scans your flash storage or SD card to recover any deleted photos, videos, or audio files.
This photo recovery tool is free to download, then you can scan, preview & recover up to 10 files at no cost. To recover unlimited photos & videos as part of your entire DCIM folder, upgrade anytime to a paid version.
Here’s how to use the tool.
- Connect your SD card into your computer using an SD card slot or a USB card reader.
- Open Stellar Photo Recovery tool and choose Photos & Videos on the what to recover page.
- Select the specific location or drive. For e.g., Removable Disk (F:)
- Run the scan. Deep Scan comes automatically enabled for removable storage devices including SD card.
- Within some time, your deleted files will be recovered.
- When your lost photos and videos appear, double-click to preview them, and then click Recover.
Save the recovered photos to your computer’s desktop or main hard drive. Never save them back onto the same SD card during the recovery process, to avoid permanent loss of the deleted files.
Recover Missing or Deleted DCIM Folder from Android Internal Storage
If your DCIM folder or photos are missing from the Android internal storage or file manager, they are again either hidden or deleted in the phone itself. First, let’s walk through the methods to unhide the folder and recover it, if deleted.
Method 1: Check the .nomedia File
Android devices have a built-in feature designed to hide sensitive private files. If you put a completely blank text file named exactly .nomedia inside a folder, your phone’s media scanning system hides that folder and does not display them in the Gallery app.
When you download a Vault app on your Android device, these apps often hide the photos by dropping a .nomedia file into the DCIM folder. This prevents the files from appearing in the main gallery. If the vault app is poorly coded, it may hide the entire DCIM folder instead of hiding just a few folders or files. Also, sometimes, if that app crashes, or gets uninstalled, the .nomedia file remains inside in your storage and hides the folder.
The user opens their phone’s gallery, sees nothing, and assumes their DCIM folder was deleted. However, you just need to unhide the DCIM folder by locating and deleting the .nomedia file inside it.
- Open your phone’s File Manager app.
- Go into the app’s settings menu and look for an option that says Show Hidden Files or Show System Files.
- Files starting with a .nomedia.
- Navigate to your main internal storage or your SD card and open the DCIM folder.
- Look through the files. If you see a file named .nomedia, long-press it and hit Delete.
- Restart your phone and wait for a few minutes.
Once your phone restarts, the internal system media scanner will re-index the folder, and all your missing pictures will instantly start showing up in the gallery.
Method 2: Check Your Phone’s Local File Trash
If you deleted the DCIM folder photos and videos accidentally, the first place to look for them is the Trash. Most deleted videos and photos in an Android phone are moved to the Recently Deleted folder in your gallery app.
- Find and open your phone’s built-in file explorer app e.g., My Files, or Files by Google.
- Look for the Trash or Recycle Bin folder.
- If you find your DCIM folder sitting in there, simply select it and tap the Restore button to send it back to its original spot.
You can also find the trash in your gallery app.
- On your Android phone, go to Gallery/Album, and scroll down to the recently deleted folder.
- Now, select the photos and restore them.
You can also check your cloud app trash on your device to find the deleted photos.
Check Trash in Google Photos: Open the Google Photos app, tap Library at the bottom, and select Trash. Deleted photos remain here for 30 days (if not backed up) or 60 days (if files are backed up) before disappearing. If you see them, just select them and hit Restore.
Check Trash in Samsung / OneDrive / Cloud Accounts: Open the cloud app, tap on the three horizontal lines or three dots to open the menu, and look for Trash. If you find your photos in the recycle bin, just restore from there.
Method 3: Check Your Cloud Backups
Most smartphones back up your photos in the background. Even if you deleted the local folder on your physical phone, the cloud copies might be safe. For that, you need to check which cloud storage your deleted files were stored on. Try and check Google Photos or any other cloud backup service you have.
- Open the Google Photos app on your Android phone.
- Go to the Library or Collections tab located at the bottom menu.
- Browse through the backed up list of photos and videos. If you find the missing DCIM photos, select and then click on the three horizontal lines to download them back.
The photos and videos will be downloaded to your device.
Method 4: Recover Deleted DCIM Folder Using Android Data Recovery Tool
If you are not able to find your deleted DCIM folder either in your cloud backup or anywhere in the Trash, the best way to recover them is using a dedicated Android Data Recovery software. Stellar’s Android Data Recovery tool can help scan your Android phone’s internal storage and recover the deleted photos and videos in your DCIM folder. It’s a simple process – install and run the tool, scan your phone, preview the files, and then recover them.
How to Fix DCIM Folder not showing on PC?
Is your DCIM folder not showing on PC? Is it invisible when you connect your Android device to the PC while it appears at once on your phone? The issue is something else. Here, the DCIM folder is not accessed by the computer because your phone might be blocking it while protecting your privacy.
- Connect your phone to the computer with your USB cable.
- Unlock your phone screen and look for a notification that says something like USB Charging This Device or USB Settings. Tap on it.
- Change the setting from Charge Only or No Data Transfer to File Transfer or MTP. Your DCIM folder will start appearing with all your photos inside.
Common Causes of DCIM Folder Loss or Corruption
Here are the most common reasons the DCIM folder disappears or stops working:
- Accidental deletion while transferring or storage management on a computer or Android device.
- Accidental deletion, or formatting an SD card or Android internal storage.
- A corrupted file system caused by unplugging a device mid-transfer.
- Virus or malware infection on the SD card or storage drive.
- Physical damage to the memory card, such as a broken connector or bad sectors.
- A failed software update or firmware glitch on the camera or phone.
- The folder or its files are marked as hidden by the operating system.
- An outdated SD card that Windows or Mac can no longer read properly.
Conclusion
The DCIM folder containing all your photos and videos can go missing from your SD card or Android device. While the above methods can help recover the folder, you can always avoid this situation. Turn on Auto-Sync on your device with Google Photos or Dropbox to let it automatically back up your camera roll whenever you are connected to Wi-Fi.
Also, use the 3-2-1 backup rule. Keep three copies of your photos. Two on different devices (like your camera’s SD card and your laptop’s hard drive), and one safely stored away in an online cloud or external backup drive. Never pull an SD card out of a computer or turn a camera off while it is actively saving or transferring data.

My SD card says ‘The directory name is invalid’. What does that mean?
Hi Gimi, Seems like your SD card has been corrupted, and error messages may say ‘The directory name is invalid.’ In such a case, you should try accessing the card to a different port or a different system. Try updating the disk driver and checking with the chkdsk onto the computer.
