Can´t select advanced controls, I had it open one time but can´t open it again.
I will have the record button visible.

  If you want the Record button visible in VLC, make sure Advanced Controls are enabled. Go to View → Advanced Controls, and the recording buttons should appear above the playback controls.
  
  If the option isn’t showing again, try restarting VLC or resetting VLC preferences, as sometimes the UI settings don’t refresh properly.

I have an LG Slim Portable DVD writer Model GP50NB40. Tried to install it on two laptops one with Windows 8.1 and the other Windows10. This device has never been installed befor and the original Disc is Lost. I cannot find installation software on the web. Only updates. I contacted LG support. They gave me the link to VLC Software. Installed on both Pc´s no luck.. It cannot find the device. Searching in control panel, install or find new software. Nothing. Can VLC install this writer or only reproduce that which is already installed?? Any Ideas Please

  VLC cannot install or detect hardware like a DVD writer—it’s only a media player used to play discs or video files once the drive is recognized by the system.
  
  For the LG Slim Portable DVD Writer (GP50NB40), the drive normally works as a plug-and-play USB device, so Windows should detect it automatically without special installation software. You can try these steps:
  
  • Check if the drive appears in Device Manager → DVD/CD-ROM drives.
  • Try connecting it to a different USB port or cable.
  • Open Disk Management to see if the drive is detected there.
  • Restart the PC with the drive connected.
  
  If Windows recognizes the drive, then VLC can be used to play DVDs from it, but it cannot install or enable the hardware itself.

Is there anyone out there well-versed on computer media players? VLC playlists have not been reliable (I made the VLC playlist, had the external drive where the actual files are, plugged in with the correct drive letter, etc), and when I loaded the LATEST .xspf list into VLC, it doesn’t open. It just shows “playlist”, but nothing else. However, a previous playlist on a thumb drive ALWAYS opens on my desktop computer! This has happened many times that a painstakingly created playlist is saved on the desktop, VLC exited, and when the playlist is clicked on, it loads, but doesn’t open! The playlist is saved on the desktop, and a duplicate of the same is saved on the external hard drive, and neither works. Once and for all, if nothing else, I’d like to just understand this app, because I’d been using it for years and would like not to abandon it if the problem is something simple.

  This usually happens when the .xspf playlist can’t locate the original media file paths, even if the external drive is connected. If the drive letter or folder path changes, VLC may load the playlist but show it as empty.
  
  You can try a few things:
  • Ensure the external drive letter is exactly the same as when the playlist was created.
  • Open the playlist with Media → Open File instead of double-clicking it.
  • Try re-saving the playlist after loading the files again in VLC.

I created a playlist, with the files on an external drive, and all was well until I saved it one final time and tried to play it again this morning. It loads but doesn’t open. This not the first time it has happened. I checked the drive letter to make sure it hadn’t been changed (but whenever this happens, a different message comes up but AT LEAST THE PLAYLIST OPENS!), so that’s not the problem. It just says “playlist” but doesn’t open. What could it be?

  If the playlist loads but shows only “playlist” without listing the files, it usually means VLC can’t properly read the media paths saved in the playlist file.
  
  Since your files are on an external drive, a few things to check:

  • Try opening VLC first and then load the playlist using Media → Open File.
