How to Repair a ProRes Video File?

A few months ago, a user reached out to me with a query to fix family vacation videos recorded on his iPhone. Those were some large, high-quality, video files stored in ProRes video format.

The problem was that when these files were copied to a laptop, they refused to play. The media player showed an error and the clip would not open, which is apparently, a common issue.

Let’s understand this ProRes format first, the reason it gets corrupted, and how to fix a damaged or unplayable ProRes video file.

What is ProRes video format?

Developed by Apple - ProRes or Pro-Resolution is a specific video codec format that offers high-quality, yet compressed video for professional-grade video recording. This format and compression are generally designed for better post-production results and specifically for users who love editing.

Common Uses of ProRes Video Format

ProRes video format is a great mix of post editing performance, visual clarity, and stabilization.

Application includes - Professional filmmaking, television production, and commercial video projects. ProRes offers exceptional color accuracy and minimizes compression artifacts, even after multiple edits and renders. Apart from iPhones, even DSLRs and digital cameras nowadays record in ProRes video format.

Why Do ProRes Video Files Get Corrupted?

Many a times video recording on devices gets interrupted. The reason for these interruption include abrupt device shutdown, SD card errors, sudden battery drain, glitches in the device’s OS, insufficient storage, transfer errors, or a virus attack. Once interrupted, the file does not save properly on the storage and get corrupted.

You can fix a corrupted ProRes file with some easy methods and repair tools shared in this blog. But before that, let’s understand how to identify a damaged ProRes video file.

How to Identify a Damaged ProRes Video?

A damaged ProRes file usually shows the below signs:

  • The video may play on your iPhone or camera, but refuses to play on computer.
  • Similarly, it may struggle or stutter while playing in a video player.
  • Video playback may freeze in the middle, or display green, gray, black, or red lines.
  • The screen may turn black, missing visuals with only audio, or sometimes the audio may be missing.
  • An error message may appear saying the file format is not supported.

Quick Troubleshooting to Try Before Fixing ProRes Video Files

A corrupt or damaged ProRes video requires specialized tools and software to fix it, but before heading for any such repair tools, try out these simple and quick troubleshooting fixes.

  • Try playing the file in another media player. Because not all video player apps are designed for ProRes, even some players support ProRes better than others.
  • Run an Antivirus scan on your device or file with a reliable antivirus software.
  • Copy the file again from the original device if possible, because previously the file transfer may have failed.
  • Check if the device has enough storage, before playing the video again, clear temporary files, and try again.
  • Check for updated codecs, because outdated software can also cause playback errors.

If the file still does not open, a video repair software will be needed.

Repair ProRes Video File

You only need a sample file - a working video file recorded from the same device and of the same video format. This helps the software understand how the original file should look and then reconstruct the header or other parts of the corrupt video’s data.

The repair time depends on the file size, a large ProRes video can take longer because it contains more data. And it’s always better to save the repaired file in a new folder.
