phones like Huawei even have a built in backup app.

may differ with Android phones. Generally, you can find it in the Settings of

If the Photos are not properly visible, the you can try to open the files in ES Explorer or Total CMD file manager . You can also try to transfer your pictures to the DCIM/Camera folder on SD card or in device internal memory so that it becomes visible in android gallery app.
Be sure to enable the backup feature on your Android Phone to avoid losing files
If you are able to see only thumbnails then clear cached images in Android Gallery and delete file .thumbnails in DCIM folder.
